Hey just a heads up about why the Hurricane Wars was rated so low, it was one of the books that was targetted by Cait Corrain during her review bombing to try sabotage other debut authors, I haven't actually read the book myself but thought it would be worth mentioning in case you weren't caught up on that Book Twitter drama - loved the vibes of this video too so cozy 😊
@jaimefok10 ай бұрын
WAS IT? I heard of that drama but missed that the hurricane wars was part of it!
@louiseoh750110 ай бұрын
It was crazy there's a list floating around online of all the books she targeted so people have been trying to boost those authors but yeah that's why it was strange to see a new book rated so low but its great that its getting some attention and fair reviews now ☺️

I am currently devouring Fourth Wing, Two Twisted Crowns, and Happy Place… and I dread any moment I have to stop reading them! They are all so good. I may have to give Kristen Hannah another try. The first book I read from her was The Four Winds and it was so sad and depressing, and I just didn’t feel like there was an ending to the story. But maybe that was just that book. I really enjoyed this video with testing out the ratings from goodreads. I normally don’t purchase a book unless it’s about 4 star or higher in Goodreads 😅

3 of my FAVOURITE books from 2023 - i love that for you! there's definitely a lot of sadness in the women too, but i do think it's definitely a well-rounded story with a good ending!

I'm so excited to read Kristen Hannah's new book! I've read several of her books and have loved them all. ❤Other than The Women, I'm probably most excited to read The Fury by Alex Michaelides. I really enjoy his writing style and books.

Hmmmm I'm definitely going to check out The Women now! I generally stick to fantasy/ sci-fi but maybe it's time to broaden that scope a bit (there's unfortunately a limit to how many times I can reread my favourites and there never seem to be enough books coming out to satisfy me:( My TBR right now is mainly just a whole bunch of free kindle samples because I don't want to commit to the books (and I'm trying to curb book spending a little) until I've had a taster of what they're like.... otherwise I'd say my most looked-forward-to book is probably Empire of the Damned by Jay Kristoff which is coming out this week!

I think I read somewhere that "The Hurricane Wars" started life as Reylo (Star Wars) fan fiction, so the characters feeling 2-dimensional might be because of that - an over-reliance on you already being familiar with the characters they're based on.

Am a bit worried for when you actually get around to Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn in particular) just in case you don't like it 😭 if you do like it, then a whole new world will suck you in and take you through so many different adventures and emotions, but I understand that it's not for everyone and that in itself makes me so sad that they couldn't experience what I did 😢

It's to be expected I guess, since The Women is authored by a White American woman, but it's just sad that even today, at the global level, the Vietnam war is all about how much Americans suffered, when they were actually the invaders, and not about the Vietnamese people whose country was being invaded, who were the actual victims of the war. I know there is literature about the war from the Vietnamese perspective (which is how I got to know/study about it in India) but it's pathetic how the worldview is so first-world oriented at the cost of being unfair to the third-world countries.
@jaimefok10 ай бұрын
There are of course many people on all sides, and from all countries who suffer during a war. I don’t think it’s pathetic for an author to tell the story from a POV that they can relate to the most. As you mention, there is literature about the war from the Vietnamese side as well. Why should any “side” or POV overshadow the other?
