I have never loved a movie sooo much..I un derstand Hollywood will not always be historically correct,but I looked past that and focused on the storyline...I laughed,cried, got angry and fell in love with Red button's character ( he loved his wife and loved her deeply,...sigh) Marlon Brando's character made me laugh ( his southern one liners were funny) but the scales fell off his eyes and he too fell in love(on his own terms, not feeling pushed into it)..I could go on, but I am glad people in the military are free to love whom they wish...people everywhere can love whom they wish..makes life bearable with someone by your side.

I was 8 years old when this movie was released, but only saw it for the first time several years later as a teenager when it came out on TV. I immediately fell head over heels for the Hana-Ogi character played by Miiko Taka. To this day, I still regard her as the ideal woman for love and marriage. Everything about her seemed perfect, especially her voice and manner of speaking.

In those days, the US had laws against "miscegenation" laws, so it was against the law for a white person to marry someone of a different race. The laws weren't taken off the books until around 1970 in most places.

Actually, the US Federal Supreme Court ended such laws in 1967. At the time I believe they still existed in 17 states. However, some of these laws specified that one partner could not be black; Asians and Pacific Islanders were not always prohibited. A number of American military men married Japanese women during the occupation of Japan, and returned to the US with them.
