Nice work. That thing is a neat and in the 20 minutes I've known about it I already have several ideas for projects using them. Mainly after you make the C02 Module work with Smart Things I'd like to use it to monitor a small diesel space heater as a safety precaution. Now with the luminance tester and the temperature sensor could also it be configured as a secondary smoke detector? But one that could be configured to start an automated fire suppression response.

I suspect they're trying to figure out if this is legal in any way before they drive it around on the road or they figured out that it's probably not legal so they weren't going to just video themselves breaking laws (or risk doing that if they weren't sure) because if you read through a lot of the comments you may notice a lot of them are referencing 96 mph in a school zone, have you've been already figured out that that was mkdhb that did that
@EnglishMikeСағат бұрын
Two possible reasons. One, the glow wears off too quickly for Linus to get far enough away from his house to prevent doxing. Two, concerns about the legality of the glowing skin (different countries and different states/provinces have different laws about lighting up a car) and even if it's legal, you're making yourself a target for a traffic stop by a cop who might think it's illegal. Anything that is a distraction to other drivers is potentially legally questionable.

This was genuinely one of the the first things we tried. The result was underwhelming, due to the principles of relative perception. For a phosphorescent effect to really stand out, the majority of the surface needs to emit light. Keep in mind that this isn’t a backlit object - it’s passively decaying a glow over time. When most of the surface is opaque black, the glowing traces (while technically glowing just as much as a "mostly glow" version) appear weak and scattered. For this first Glow in the Dark drop, it was a top priority to have the glow effect as impactful as possible (rather than a footnote on the design).

This is akin to Goodyear with their tires: "While Goodyear reasoned that the glowing tires would provide an additional layer of safety because they were more visible in fog and poor weather, they often times had the opposite effect. Since they looked like something straight out of science fiction, other drivers would dangerously hit their brakes or turn their heads to get a better look."

Oh wow, just looked that up. Looks like that wasn't the only problem. The tires didn't last long, and I imagine neither did the light bulbs. I'm also curious how they powered them; I imagine you'd need to install some sort of extremely wear-resistant barrel jack in the very middle of the axle.

The stated wavelength should be UVA however all UV is a risk for skin cancer and premature aging. People use tanning booths however and most seem to do fine but do beware that when they do they wear goggles for protection. The concert that used blacklight and caused attendees' retinas to burnt wasn't down to the wrong wavelength but rather a moronic choice for lighting as all UV can cause photokeratitis which thankfully is temporary damage, think of it as sunburn to your eyes, it causes pain and blurred vision however it's unlikely to be permanent, part of the reason welding goggles exist is the high levels of UV, however infrared intense visible light and debris are also a problem but UV is the main concern. Longer-term exposure could also lead to cataracts and macular degeneration. How someone thought it was a good idea to expose attendees to UV for hours is beyond me. UVA is not associated with photokeratitis however it can still irritate the eyes after intense and long-term exposure. Cataracts and macular degeneration are still a concern as well in fact even more so.

I believe it's a legal gray area as it's not "technically" a powered light source but would be defined as some sort of reflective surface, and as it's not on the windows or technically reflective in the sense of glare, would be fine. The most questionable part is whether it obfuscates a license plate to a camera. Else, no more of an issue then HID headlights

"Technically" isn't enough to avoid getting stopped by a cop who has never come across it before, hence the "let's not show this on camera" decision. In our country, there may not be 'lighting' on a car that is not standard, you may not hinder other traffic with lights and 'article 5' of our traffic law prescribes that you may not behave dangerously. I painted my mountain bike frame with phosphorescent overcoat paint 25 years ago, night rides through the park were fun. I'm surprised you didn't install uv leds under the wrap and poke them through every few cm. that way you could charge on the go.

UV light is so terrible for the eyes; very hard for the layman to understand what is safe and what isn't, when the risk is permanent eye damage. Something I've always been invested in because I weld

Skin damage too. I grabbed a usb UVC light for some seconds. Next day my palm was peeling. When i wqs helping a friend grow pot i could immediately feel the UV and the eye irritation.

I'm just over halfway through it and I'm thinking I'd love to see a follow-up piece or a side piece on this about the damage that UV is really doing to that interior through that glass. Might be a good plan to cover the glass even if it's tinted. I think you'd be surprised at the bleaching effect that could happen to your

Glow in the dark? Hit or miss depending on where you live. It may count as a distraction in some areas. But then again Canada is basically the wild west at this point with those magic mushroom cafes. So... I wouldn't worry about it lol.
@Piipperi8002 сағат бұрын
Canada won't even allow underglow lights, so I'd assume this isn't perfectly legal. But also realistically I don't know if it actually glows enough irl on the road for it to be a problem.

That much UVA for a couple minutes isn't going to be a big problem. Glass is quite absorbent to UVA so most of the time that light setup is going to be on will be when he's in his car driving out of the garage which likely won't be much of a concern
