That’s a very nice looking TV and seems to be of good quality, they should also release a paid version without the adverts! I know that’s not the point but I love the idea of having the lower display for browsing the menu system and displaying widgets (as long as they were customisable) and I’m sure people would pay good money for one without the ad window.

55" TVs are so cheap now yet that secondary wide aspect ratio screen and soundbar are likely expensive. I can't possibly see this working out for them, making hundreds of dollars in ads per person is going to take a long time yet by the time that cost is recovered 55" TVs will be a fraction of what they cost even today. This isn't going to age well. As a commercial product where the secondary display is used for a different purpose I could see this working, but that's likely not a big enough market for them.

@1D10CRACY6 күн бұрын
It has 3 HDMI ports. The top screen appears to be pretty exceptional as far as quality and clarity. I like the idea of the bottom screen configured as an information screen. And I'll also add that the sound bar is pretty good. The added screen makes the TV's physical aspect tall, keep that in mind. But overall, I like it. It's free, so you're not out much and can always send it back. As far as collecting your viewing analytics, even a cheap Walmart TV will do that. What makes Telly different is the ads on the bottom screen, for some this may be annoying.

do you actually own the TV or is this like a lease? When you cancelled older satellite service you had to return the "box"
@1D10CRACY6 күн бұрын
That is a good question. I guess it's like a free lease? Digging through the FAQs, I found this... "What is the process for return if a user wants to opt out or upgrade and on that is there a base timeline for inclusion (If after receipt someone opts out tomorrow versus 6 mos from now versus 2 years from now as they want a newer or bigger tv) As an early adopting household that has agreed to help us improve Telly for the millions of Americans who will receive the biggest innovation in TV since color in the years to come, we are grateful for beta program members' partnership. Should anyone wish to return your Telly at any time during the public beta program they may do so in compliance with our terms and conditions."

I'll give it to them at least they are being upfront and honest my question is can you actually switch to the different HDMI ports without the TV being connected to the internet what would happen if you were to desolder some of the unnecessary Hardware
@Haffmatthew4 күн бұрын
I think this is kinda cool. It’s open and honest about the data and metrics it collects, has physical ways to prove the camera can’t spy on you, and so long as you abide by the terms of service- it’s free. Not a bad deal for those not worried about data stuff

@kentuckycornbread85026 күн бұрын
The tv is asking for permission to watch most moves you make. That’s fine if we agree. My issue is how good is their security. They want our info to sell to other companies to try to entice us to buy products. What if they got hacked and the bad guys was watching right along beside them and they didn’t know it? Do they have any claims of top of the line security, encryption servers or cameras? Telly is being somewhat honest but what a disaster if they got hacked and we had weird-oh’s tracking us.

@1D10CRACY6 күн бұрын
Just to clarify this comment, the app is used to register Telly, modify widgets and set up your profile. By default after installing the app, all permissions are disabled including location tracking with the exception of camera use. I assume this is for barcode scanning. This is my experience, with an Android phone. Google on the other hand, is tracking android phones and collecting analytics.
@owllymannstein71136 күн бұрын
I assume it just goes through wifi instead of cell data, so you could probably just get an old used phone to set it up, then throw it in a drawer somewhere.
