Saw a post once about medicinal plants that said something like "A lot of medicinal plants are just poisonous plants where the effect of the poison is the opposite of the symptom you're trying to cure." Foxglove, with its effects on the heart, is one good example.

We still use digitalis today at the hospital, though it’s quite a dirty drug. The side effects are quite nasty and there are better protocols in place for people with arrhythmias and heart failure. Some older patients who’ve been on digitalis and tolerating it well enough we kinda just keep them on it.

This is amazing! But I'd like to share this fact about willow bark as a "natural painkiller". It may work, but one problem is that there is no good way to know the dosage of the chemical that actually helps, so it can be dangerous trying to self medicate with it regardless of it being "natural"
@mateuszcielas33622 жыл бұрын
im always shocked how people discovered that some plants can be beneficial, same as now when people invent new drugs and they pick up some random compound and say "hey, this might be useful"
@darthplagueis132 жыл бұрын
Well, these days there's usually a bit more behind developing new drugs. A lot of the time, it boils down to finding a compound that has a very simular chemical structure to some kind of biological messenger in the body which, depending on the specifics, can either block a receptor to prevent the body from having some kind of adverse behavior, or can actually trigger a receptor to signal part of the body to do something beneficial.

Since you asked for suggestions to add to your supplies, I'd suggest teatree oil, particularly from melaleuca alternifolia (apparently there are several plants called "teatree"). It's a plant in the citron family, and the oil is extracted from its leaves and stems. Some studies (some) suggest antiseptic properties (it's commonly used for that purpose), and it's popular enough that I can buy it at my local midwest-US grocery store pharmacy as an alternative remedy. Since teatree is notorious for causing pain in open wounds and mucous membranes, people used to think that the pain was what removed infection. That's not my own belief, but I have tried it myself, and I think this stuff has a lot of promise if folks could get research dollars onto it for further testing (I'm not sure if the FDA would approve an antiseptic that causes pain, but maybe there's a specific set of chemicals that can be extracted and synthesized). Alternative to teatree, some people believe that pine tar has similar effects, and you're more likely to find pine trees in the US and Canada; teatree is more of an Australia/New Zealand area product. That said, we could simply use triclosan (often found in antiseptic soaps and washes). It's effective, but it also breaks down slowly in the environment, which is nice for hospital walls, but not ideal in nature.

its more that people are blinded by a fact that a mega rich individual can be a very well educated person in other fields without having a said degree in those subjects - like musk, gates and so on. also people are so caught up in the fact that hes rich and " not doing the world a solid by making things cheap or free " and neglect the fact that his foundation is pushing for a better medical future and most of it is not by him alone

Musk was born to filthy rich parents, creates - no - funds (or rather accepts billions in subsides for), products that are either too niche and expensive to be a positive impact on the world, or are downright negative (no he didn't invent paypal), of which are often built on the backs of 3rd world child labor. @@mateuszcielas3362 science is when we collect anecdotal evidence. Oganize and replicate to demonstrate overall patterns and derive an underlying principle. Personal anecdotes are often science on a small scale, e.g. multiple options tested and the successful options grade on effectiveness. Another consideration is that biochemistry can be very complex depending on multiple sets of variables interacting. Some times the cause of an issue can be very obscure and not correlate with the vast majority of cases. You may find an anecdotal solution which fits one specific case and not others or where effectiveness varies wildly across the rang of cases.
