To be fair though you could still call it "redundant" because it only accentuates the motion variation. It's kind of just chaining two conceptually similar mechanisms.

I believe the purple part does indeed affect how this mechanism functions. I think it influences the speed of the teal part. Without the purple part, the teal part would be rotating at a constant angular velocity, but the purple part makes it rotate at slightly different speeds.

Whilst it's not shown, the teal piece would be connected and fixed in place. Think of it as a crank shaft (which it basically is). The teal arm connected to the purple piece is offset from teal arm connected to the blue piece, with a round section in the middle. The yellow base frame should extend upwards and connect to the teal piece like a connecting rod with two piece bearings. The teal piece then functions as constantly variable transmission as the purple drive arm rotates through 360 degrees, which amplifies greatly the speed differential of the platforms directional motion. And yes, I spent way more time than I should have explaining this because I desperately need you to make a follow up video where you do it again and compare the two versions, before personally thanking me for inspiring you and serenade me a heavy metal cover of "Row Row Row Your Boat". Sorry, the fast and slow forward and back motion reminds me of the movement of a rowing exercise machine. If you are still reading this comment. Please pretty please...

I don't think so. The purple piece moves at constant speed. Because it pushes the teal piece close to its axis for part of its rotation and farther away for the other part, it varies the speed of the teal piece. This varying speed causes the slider to move faster in one direction and slower in the other.

Scrap Man, next time you have to build linear moving mechanisms, just use 2 pistons. How to make this work? so: make a 1x2x1 platform out of blocks, place 2 pistons side by side on it, max their distance and speed. Next, build, while on the lift, on top of them another 1x2x1 slab so they connect. Last part is to get 2 logic gates and set one to NAND, connect the AND to NAND so that NAND is always on. Connect AND to one piston, and NAND to the other. Voilà, hit them with a hammer, they would basically slide with 0 friction. This would help so that your creations stay as one piece. You can also stack them for more reach. Guys, if anyone read this, please like so it gets to him, would save so much glitches from happening.

I think that extra blue linkage you deleted is there to make the movement very smooth and linear in the slow direction. This is probably part of an industrial machine meant to move an object while it's being worked on at a constant speed, then it shuttles back to the start position to get the next one. A lot of these kinds of linkages are super cool but not really used anymore, 'cause we just don't need to. When you have to use a huge steam engine to run the entire process, you need lots of linkages and machines to get the movements you need. Now we'd just use a linear actuator, maybe with a ratcheting mechanism for the return to be faster. Easy-peasy.

If you take note of the purple and turquoise pieces at 2:26, you can see that the turquoise piece is not centered with the shaft of the purple piece. The purple piece also only passes through half the length of the turquoise piece (not counting the center bit), whereas the turquoise piece passes through the entire length of the dark blue piece. As such, it seems like the turquoise piece is acting as a sort of 'gear ratio' (I'm not sure of the correct term) between the purple and dark blue pieces, allowing for the more fluid motion of the original configuration In other words, you broke it before you even built it, lol

The purple and green piece make up 2 stages for speed differential. If the rotation of the purple and green where aligned, then they would go at the same speed. But because they are offset, their relative rates of rotation are different. When the purple is pointing down, corresponding to the slow motion, the distance from the centre of the green to the pivot is largest, meaning the motion of the purple will have a small impact on the motion of the green. When purple is pointing up, corresponding to the fast motion, the distance from the centre of the green to the pivot is smallest, meaning the motion of the purple will have a large impact on the motion of the green.

The ratio of the light green part to the blue part is the same as the purple part to the light green part. It's like two asymmetrical stages of acceleration. An interesting part that is not shown in the video is that the sliding platform also has a conversion of force and speed like a gear system, when moving slowly it moves with much more force than when moving quickly.

6:09 - so do you see the animation? when it goes down it kinda accelerates too much and snaps back. acceleration means force! starting to move too fast like that means you're kinda pinching the mechanism. probably it would be nice to "enlarge" the circles to make this part of the movement slower and smoother. "enlarging" the circle means the pin is pushing the light purple bar side to side, when it goes to the bottom it's getting too close to the light purple bar's center, therefore it need WAY TOO MUCH force to keep pushing or count with kinetic energy to skip that part.

While I do agree with the other comments that the purple piece shouldn't have been eliminated outright, I do think it would exacerbate the jerkiness issue, requiring that the whole thing be even slower. It looks like, with that piece in place, even more torque would be needed to run the input at a constant speed, and the torque was already maxing out without it. (You can see the input running at an irregular speed before he slowed it down).
