The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said, “Verily you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will her leader be, and what a wonderful army will that army be!” [Ahmad; Hakim, al-Mustadrak]
In this beautiful poem by Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Sultan Fatih exalts, expresses his love, and elegantly responds to his Beloved’s ﷺ hadith, that praises him, the great liberator of Constantinople.

Poetry is part and parcel of our Islamic history as it has been a creative medium that has been utilised for a variety of purposes. This includes but is not limited to, emphasising love between spouses, helping students memorise knowledge, teasing and provoking enemies in battle, and praising our beloved Nabi Muhammad ﷺ.
With this series, we aim to revive beautiful historic poems from our great pious predecessors, and appropriate them making it more accessible to a wider audience.

Sen kokmayan gülü neyleyim,
Neyleyim sensiz baharı?
Sen doğmayan günü neyleyim,
Neyleyim sensiz ben dünyayı?
Senin tenine değmeden gelen yağmuru istemem
meltemi istemem.
Seni parlayacaksa parlasın yıldızlar,
Sana yanmayan yıldızı semalarda istemem.
Bülbüller söyleyecekse seni söylesin,
Senden okumayan bülbül olsa dinlemem.
Özlemim sen olacaksan yansın yüreğim,
Sılası sen olmayan gurbeti istemem, vatanı istemem.
Bir ateş yakacaksa beni kalbimden,
Senin aşkının ateşi yaksın,
Senden gayrı başka bir aşkla kül olursa kalbim,
Bu kalbi istemem, ateşi istemem, koru istemem.
Seni göremediğim vahalar bedevilerin olsun,
Ben senin çölünü isterim, suyu istemem.
Sana çıkacaksa durmaz yürürüm,
Sonu sen çıkmayan yönü istemem, yolu istemem.
Ben gönüllü bir köleyim, kulağımda küpem.
Kalbini fethedecekse geçerim bin Sina’yı birden.
Yoksa neyime?
Bu fethi istemem, Mısır’ı istemem, cihanı istemem.
Ben Sultan Fatihim, önündeyim İstanbul’un.
Yakarım bu şehri yüzünde bir tebessüm için.
Yoksa gül yüzünü güldürmeyen sultanlığı istemem, İstanbul’u istemem.
Ben bir garip yunusum, yazdığım sensin, yandığım sen.
Senden gayrı bir aşka ben kalemi istemem, kağıdı istemem.
Ben senin ümmetinim, sensin benim efendim.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “There will come to the people years of treachery, when the liar will be regarded as honest, and the honest man will be regarded as a liar; the traitor will be regarded as faithful, and the faithful man will be regarded as a traitor; and the Ruwaibidah will decide matters.’ It was said: ‘Who are the Ruwaibidah?’ He said: ‘Vile and base men who control the affairs of the people.’” -Sunan Ibn Majah 4036 Narrated by the prominent Companion Abu Hurairah (RA), he said, “The fourth fitna is the darkness of the blind. Which will rise like the waves of the sea, there will be no house left of the Arab or Non-Arab, where the Fitna will not enter. With this fitna, Muslims will continue to be humiliated. Fitna is to circulate in Sham (Greater Syria/Levant) but will spend the night in Iraq. It will continue to scatter inside the Arab land by hand and foot. If the Fitna mixed with people like skin to skin, then the problem will take on such a widespread and deadly form that people will not be able to differentiate between good and bad. At that moment, no one will dare to stop the fitna. Meanwhile, though the smell of peace blows one side, on another side Fitna will intensify. If someone is a Muslim in the morning, he will become a Kafer (non-believer) in the evening. No one can escape from that trial. But only those people can survive, like the person drowning in the sea, crying for help. It will last for about 12 years and at one point everything will become clear to everyone. In the meantime, a brigde of gold will surface from the river Euphrates. Everyone will go to war to occupy it, and seven of every nine will die.” -Kitab Al-Fitan: Nuaim Ibn Hammad - 676. The law of the Qur’an will prevail in the world because it agrees with reason and wisdom. I have come to understand that humanity needs only a Divine law to establish the truth and destroy falsehood.
