I took this story as a metaphor. I feel like this story explained the standards of living between the has an has not. The cultural Hawaii I.E the Rules and the dark part of modernize Hawaii I.E Villa. The water and fire represented the purest form of hawaii but then the demonic entity expressed the approaching mainland suffocation of Hawaiian land. The rules were set to sent a message to all newcomers to respect the hawaii culture.
