Back then, if you were first place in your division, you were guaranteed a top 3 seed in the conference playoffs :) So the 3 seed won their division at 49 wins and got the 3 seed, while the 54 win team in the 4 seed was second in a different division.

This will never be accurate why??? Because it’s the playbook n what coaches run to get players open. And key players are never in the gm in key moments. To make it fair u run everyone with the same playbook . Some of the old coaches n teams don’t even run 3 pt plays.
