I restored this rusty $1 can opener to find out It’s worth MUCH more…

I got this ancient looking can opener for just 1€ to restore it. While restoring it I found out it was not a worthless vintage item like I thought… The can opener is pretty rusty and the old paint is partially gone. Also the wooden part is pretty bad looking and there is a bit of mold on it. Sometimes looking for items to restore I make similar finds which I could flip fast for good profit. My typical projects are so laborious and require me to buy expensive parts so they are not usually good for making profit. So far I’ve kept all the items to myself. However it would be interesting to occasionally post videos doing restorations for business and flipping flea market finds for profit. Would you be interested in such videos?
After buying the can opener I started googling vintage can opener etc. and I found similar looking opener that were used by German in the world war 2. German ground find items are not extremely rare here, but I didn’t see any markings so I thought it’s probably just normal can opener with similar design. After disassembly I cleaned most of the loose dirt off the parts and put the parts is rust remover. After sitting in there overnight, I could just wash off the loosened rust with water. After this washing I noticed there was some text on the scales. I removed the paint with paint stripper and found that it said FRAWAG elite. This meant this is an original German can opener from WWII. I went on ebay to check out the prices and I was blown away to see the most expensive german can opener were priced at 150 euros (165 USD). For a can opener! And I got it for 1€…
Under the paint there was some sort of plating. I wasn’t sure I could nickel plate over it for even color so I removed it by sanding. The other metal parts were sanded as well. I went all the way up to 2000 grits. After this the parts were polished. This gives a decent polishing results with reasonable work. The blade was also sharpened with a tiny file because I intend to use this. I only have one of those “normal” can openers which are basically a bent piece of sheet metal.
After the metal parts were polished I cleaned the up with acetone and electroplated them with nickel. More about that process can be found from my Odd Experiments video ( • How to make simple DIY... . Nickel plating will protect the parts from rust. I didn’t plate the blade because the nickel would just wear off. That amount of nickel would certainly do no harm but it doesn’t do any good either. And I will have to clean the blade after use anyways.
I decided that since the mold on the wood hadn’t done much damage I sanded it off and then sanded the whole handle so that it still had nice patina to remind of the history of the item. Also I really like the patina’s contrast with the polished metal.
After all the parts were done I assembled everything with rivets. And gave the can opener a quick polish to remove whatever scratches I had got on it during assembly.

It was likely initially for people who didn't have the strength or dexterity to use a knife. For a housewife in the mid 1900's, a can opener was likely an often used tool. That's why a lot of these things are made. It's also super easy to peel a potato with a knife, so why do we have a potato peeler? It's super easy to just juice an orange with your hands, so why do we have juicers? For the people who can't :)

I am nearly 80 years young, was born in the Netherlands at the beginning of WWII. I emigrated to New Zealand in 1961, I brought with me a can opener very similar to the one you've got, different brand, mine is an Imposant. I remember my mother using it as I was growing up and am very attached to it even though it looks in a 'can't open a can' condition ;-) with the cutting blade worn almost half way through and although the toothed roundel looks better than yours, it is well and truly stuck. I love seeing "junk" finds that turn out to be useful and worth something when restored. I am nowhere near your skill level but I found a Japanese nakiri knife at a thrift store for $0.50. It was damaged and tossed in a bin. I repaired the edge and restored the handle and use it day to day. Turns out this knife goes for $120. Love your channel. Warm thoughts from the U.S.

I fully agree! I once bought a cheap Casio watch at a local flea market here in South Africa at their "junk" section for R50 (3.47 American Dollars). It was not working and in really bad cosmetic condition with the case crumbling to dust. I managed to source a new case and buttons. Then started the long process of cleaning out old battery acid and rebuilding from old case into new. It is now fully working again and it seems Casio I bought for so cheap actually quite rare and collectable. It is the Casio CA-901.

Unfortunately often restorations that go to this degree actually devalues the object you're restoring. Granted, the original shape of this made it reasonably worthless, but considering that ones still in original condition (with decades of wear) go on eBay for less than €50 I would guess that this, so heavily restored to a state not reflecting its original shape, makes it worth much less to a collector. It's a really cool object nonetheless, but if someone is restoring something for value this sort of heavy handed approach is rarely the right way to go.

@@SwitchAndLever I agree. If you have ever seen Antique Roadshow on PBS in America this often happens with furniture. Someone restores it and a Colonial table that was worth $5000 in original condition is now $50. What I mean is, I buy things like that to use and that's where I get my enjoyment. I am using a $120 kitchen knife that I got for 50 cents and put a little work into. But you do make a great point that if a person is doing this to flip the item and make some money, they need to see if they are actually devaluing it by "fixing" it.

@@jarinazf9683 I have, and I've watched the original British (which I prefer to the US one) and I grew up watching the Swedish one, even went to one of their tapings to have some things appraised. 🙂 When you have things that you think may be of considerable value, like you mentioned a colonial table, I think it's outright careless to try to restore it yourself. Always hand it over to a professional. If you on the other hand have something like this, that's mass produced and that's still not uncommon on places like eBay I say go right ahead and do whatever you want to it. It's only your own money you're losing, and if restoring it will give you joy then that's worth a whole lot more than whatever value may be lost.

A good way to prevent scratches on your shiny finish is to tape it up with masking tape before doing your final touches like rivets. Something I learned in jewelry making.

It's called a "Dolly" and it makes the rivet a lot tidier. You need to heat the rivets first, then shape them, then as they cool they contract and become tighter.

I used one of these about 15 years ago, you could buy them anywhere. [no wooden parts, some other material I can't remember] Very easy to open cans with it [smart lever can attack]. Your videos are great, because you show a talent most people have lost in our throw away society, that's true for things and also for relationships. God bless you!

Yeah, made me cringe to see him leave it out. Hardly the only time I cringed during the video though. I mean, sure, it's just a can opener, but still, some very dodgy choices made, especially doing things like hammering out the rivets with the metal part sitting on the narrow edges of a steel socket. He also shouldn't have nickel-plated it. That's updating, not restoring. That blackish finish was the original.

People may ask ~150€ but are they getting it? Not gonna lie, restoring someyhing like this, you probably could get over 100 from a die hard collector. At military/reenactor swap meets, ive seen these for 15 USD or so in okay condition. They are heads above the issued can openers the US had

Fantastic job! I really like watching your videos because you don't talk, there isn't any cheesy music and you present everything that you are doing so well. Just a suggestion-you might want to rub the wood with MinWax. It's transparent & won't effect the look but it will seal the wood so that water or other liquids don't soak into it.
