At 70 years old - which is what I will turn on June 28, 2024 - the brain is more creative than ever. The ideas appear as fireflies. Like the cocuy that lights up every morning. You receive them joyfully with an open mind, without questioning them. But yes... you wake up like a spring because they have the habit of lighting up when dawn breaks. In the last seconds of sleep. When a good option is to bundle up or hunker down and keep going, even if it's just 10 minutes. I have been wanting to tell you for some time how I started this life of travel, the press, television, radio, guides and now on KZbin where I started at 68 years old. It is a recurring question. An understandable curiosity. But I wasn't sure how to tell it to you on my channel until the idea came, I got up quickly and recorded everything. I wanted precision and I got it. Notice. I have only one suggestion for you. A single one.
The one that has governed my forty years of profession. From which I have never deviated. Set a noble, powerful, generous and transformative goal that guides all your work. When I started at the National Library in the 80s - which also took care of public libraries throughout Venezuela - Virginia Betancourt - its director - said: "We have to guarantee the right to reliable information for decision-making. For the authentic exercise of democracy."
It wasn't about buying a million books a year or increasing the percentage of readers. No! It was such a powerful and transformative goal that I made mine throughout my career. When I started writing my column “Manual de Ociosidades” in the Sunday supplement of El Nacional - one of the most important newspapers in Venezuela at the time - I was determined to provide information about services throughout Venezuela: inns, restaurants, beaches, supplies, artisans… people who were doing well in every corner.
I understood that there was a huge group that needed that information to take advantage of it and another group that needed be known about them so that their businesses could do well. I was the channel that would unite the two of them, so I had to be very trustworthy, loyal only to them and not to economic interests. Nobody ever paid to be in my column.
Only what I considered good appeared. It was like this later in my guide and also in Logbook. Reliable information to make decisions of all kinds. In Bitácora - the television program that I hosted for 15 years on RCTV on open television - I applied the same principle, but I added the sense of roots. Get Venezuelans to know Venezuela so that they love it, defend it and protect it. You only want what you know. I never imagined what Venezuela would become one day and the weight that what we did would have. So I decided to also be on KZbin to extend that knowledge about Venezuela to the 8 million Venezuelans around the world.
Let them know that Venezuela is being built from now on. And those are the stories I tell on this channel. When you have a deep and generous, transformative objective, you do not deviate from your principles. You are firm and loyal with your audience. If your goal is fame, money, power... You will do whatever it takes to achieve it.
