Bad service and manners. The food will get cold before the customer is ready on a cooler day. Looking in the background there are staff loitering, leaning up against a wall. Not the image I'd want for the company if I owned it. Even it was reasonable food it is overpriced. The peas were a processed pea colour, probably not made at the restaurant. Possibly not a good pickling vinegar. Seemed to be aimed at a quick table turnaround.

Not only is it annoying that they bring the main out earlier than anticipated but when the lad puts his arm across your food when putting the main course on the table is a no, no.

I didn't like the look of it at all, Greeno. I also didn't like the way all the waitering staff were loitering around the entrance. Reminded me of shopping in one of those big furniture stores where you feel like a prey animal in a cage of hyenas. Fair score, and really pleased to see that your subs have jumped up 👍

I'm with you on this. When I worked in the US and went into a store, it would drive me mad to be immediately assailed by shop assistants asking whether they could help. Totally unfair as they were trying to help but I just wanted to scream...if I want help I'll ask for it. Now, after 40 years in France, nothing short of a cardiac arrest will bring a shop assistant to your side... on a good day🧐

Wow that was underwhelming for a fish & chip that's 150yrs in business, also the service wasn't great, I kind of feel that maybe they rush the food out so people will eat quicker to turn the table over, and to actually charge you for that service is terrible. If a restaurant brings our mains whilst still eating our starters I’ll send the mains back . The best way to combat this kind of third rate service in British eateries is order one course at a time and give yourself a little breather after your starter.

The name Rock and Sole Plaice was a bit of a clue. As you said Greeno, a bit of a tourist trap. Average food sold for above average prices. I noticed that the waiting staff were hanging around the entrance, waiting to drag people in.

A mate of mine is old friends with the owner here and they’ve known each other from when they were teenagers . We were walking past randomly one day and my mate asked one of the staff if the boss was in and to tell him my mate was there . He came out and was happy to see my mate as they hadn’t seen each other for years and he sat us down, I thought he was going to give us a free fish and chips but all we got was a coffee. Tight bar steward! Considering he’s charging twenty five quid a pop he’s bleedin rollin in it!

The starter platter looks a meal on its own, great review, my wife and have frequented this plaice (pun intended) as we are ‘Londoners’ we enjoyed… but it is a little pricey due to the Covent Garden position.

Underwhelming food, coupled with mediocre service and high-end prices. It is surprising it has been in business for one hundred and fifty years. The power of tourism. Yes, definitely they're keen to push the history as a way to get tourists through the door. Many of whom will have a limited frame of reference as to what a good fish and chips is I guess.

The moment your main was brought to the table , you know that ut us ot a decent eatery. Send the main back. No quibbles. If they get shirty, pay for what you and ask to speak to the manager. Cause a ruckus so that other customers get the gist of your complaint. As for the colab with Gary, great stuff. Now all you need to do is take the Phall challenge!

If I had been eating wth Mrs Greeno then I would have reacted differently, but when I am filming I just kind of show how it is and get on and review the food, warts and all. As for the Phaal challenge, gary's stiching me up now isn't he ha ha! It'll have to happen I guess!

£20 for fish and chips. Didn't hear any crunch from batter. Tinned peas. Half the starter uneaten. Appalling service with main brought too early. If the staff are hanging around outside the front door...why🤔 Once worked in a turkey abattoir with long lines of us preparing the birds under the watchful eye of countless managers (a bit like the waitresses). One day I stepped out of the line and stood stock still. A line manager rushed up, "what the F are you doing?" Quick as a rattlesnake I replied, "I'm practicing for when I'm a line manager". HR reprimanded me but I swear she giggled!

Someone earlier in the comments mentioned about the staff hanging around saying "if you've time to lean, you've time to clean" 😂 Overall this is one I would recmmend avaoiding, much better out there.

If you get the chance check out my local pub, it's call the Chester Arms in Chester Street east Oxford, they do the best fish & chips, sumptuous Sunday roasts & a steak platter to die for, it's not stuffy or pretentious, tame staff who focus on quality food & beers, parking in local side streets, it is a secret gem, a destination establishment.

Only the "pirates earrings" looked good. The rest, not so much. They seem to think, hey, tourists will come here because of the history. That is true, just to say they were there, so they will always be busy and serve average food. That unfortunately is what tourism is, yikes. Yes i totally agree with everything you said- sure its London so you expect to pay, but considering my dining out lunches cost £10...you can imagine how i would feel about £45( mind you i never eat that much for lunch!) Seems everywhere in Covent Garden is pricey......although their is a large cost for traveling up to Bradford or other Yorkshire places i have seen plenty of good £10 fish & chip reviews up their!....maybe its worth going back to a breakfast cafe and try a lunch their? Might be good value?

Hi Greeno - nice fair review and coming straight of the back with your collaboration with Gary couldn't asked for a better way to relax after work. The prices reflect the area and it all looks a bit beige for my liking. And I love fish and chips, but I've seen much better (Gary on his tour for example). Bringing your main out whilst still chowing on your starter is a bit poor.

I'm a Londoner and every once in a while I get this stupid urge to try fish & chips again. I have never had a decent fish & chips ever. The battered fish is always ...alright but it's the soggy chips that always let it down. I got in late one evening and couldn't be arsed to cook us our tea so tried the new chippy just up the road. I had the battered roe. Lovely. But the chips were rank. It was like they were a day old. His shop's been taken over by another chippy.

Not sure what the coleslaw etc was for, definitely not traditional. It actually looked ok but still not representative of good old finch and chimps

I've been to a number of chippies that make their own mushy peas (check my review of Tower Fisheries in Blackpool for a classic example!🙂). This was definitely bog standard, but at above bog standard prices!

Service charge is just like the States with a tip added on, we used to make fun about them not paying their staff and tips paying the wages, here we have a minimum wage yet we are still gettin the charge

Personally I wouldn't want to try living on te minimum wage in London - you'd need tips to get by. But it should be a reward for good service, not expected for unexceptional service !

I miss rock salmon down in Dorset, one or two fish shops have it, but it's usually very small and expensive. I noticed it on your menu for £22. Once upon a time in London and surrounding areas it was the cheapest, how times change! How are the Phal suggestions coming?

The Phaal suggestions keep rolling in ! You can get Rock in one of the Swanage chippies, although I forget which !

Hiya Greeno, first thing. Loved your curry challenge, set by Gary. If you want to give him a rematch 😂😂😂♨️♨️🥘You could try the sister restaurant. Called City Spice, Brick Lane. The chippy review. Platter, why does it have Parsnips on it. Or are they spring roll rejectes? Prawns in my opinion bloomin fabulous ( why at this point, we're you over loaded with main meal and assorted sides 🤔🤔) Thought the Haddock looked greasy. Chips old fashioned 😊mixed sizes. Pretty sure coleslaw was not a traditional side for a fish supper. ( the sight of the staff hanging around the front door 🤔🤔😟🙁☹️) It's not a gherkin 😳in a chippy it's a wally 🥒Cut pickled onion??? Just mean. £20 for Haddock and chips 💷quite cheap for Covent Garden, highway robbery any where else. That's the trouble with the " outer towners " Us locals can't foot the whole bill for the upkeep of the Capital. Take care, seek out the bargains, they are there. It was a real mixed bag, I just felt the negatives far outweighed the positives. The prawns were a highlight though ! I do know of City Spice - maybe that's one to try sometime !

You can't get cheap sit down dining in Zone 1 London. Maybe if you find a weatherspoons perhaps as they have volume to run on lower margins.

@@GreenoEats That was a cafe in Southwark, low cost ingredients and possibly far lower rates/rents given the less commercial area. I cannot imagine any bricks and mortar business surviving in a place like Covent Garden without high prices and high turnover. The owner of the fish restaurant quoted £25K to cover 2 months outgoings. In Chinatown, the Kowloon bakery and buffet restaurant has to cover £30K a month to stay open.

You don't know that it's overpriced, if you take into account staff wages, rates, ingredient costs e.t.c. I didn't like the way the waiter brought out the main early, probably trying to fit bums on seats. I go there regularly and would score it positively 8/10. However your meal 2/5, fare enough.

I felt it was overpriced (just regular haddock and chips £20) - the sides were way below par, and the service shocking (although as you rightly say, probably just trained to turn tables ASAP... glad you have had a better experience of the place that I have though :-)

Classic tourist trap, I used to work that way. You are on your own and they want you to eat up and be on your way so they can maximise their revenue per table. I would have said something. £45 as well for two courses including service charge. That is a rip off. If you go just slightly away from the Touristy areas to Marylebone or Islington you will find much better fish and chip shops for at least £10-£15 less than what you paid.

@@GreenoEats Tip for handling spicy food is to have a side of sliced banana. When your mouth gets too hot, take a slice and smear it around with your tongue, it cools it down like a dream. 👍

The only fish and chip shop that I find to be the tastiest is East Park Chippy in East Hull East Yorkshire. But you can't beat going to a chip shop near the sea, especially Bridlington, at Brid Bay fisheries. You get loads mate 😜

I think saveloys started out as a London thing, but we definitely have them in Dorset. Not sure about the coleslaw though, never seen that at a chippy before!

Thanks for telling it how it is. This establishment was the same as this 15 years ago. What annoys me are the amount of young tiktok’ers and KZbinr’s (who clearly have no idea about fish and chips) doing videos on how great it is. It’s the sort of place tourists go and then say English food is awful.
