I clean mine every year, irrespective of mileage and once it's dry I apply the red K&N filter oil to the high points on the filter so it soaks all the way through. Once it's all red it goes back on. Never had a problem and it's the same process I used on dirt bikes. Ride safe...

The oil is coming from your head breather bolts... Get a Fueling Parts Vented Dipstick cause your having blow-by issues... This will reduce the amount of oil coming from the breather bolts & feeding back into the cylinder's

It's basically a K and N filter. Clean and oil it appropriately. The oil stops dirt from entering somewhat. They flow great but aren't really very good at keeping dirt out of your engine. Enjoy

Hey Dude - 12:00-12:05 You say you "CAN'T" oil the stock filter. This is 100% FALSE. Your 2016-2017 FXDLS Owners Manual Page 137-138 clearly describes the cleaning/oiling procedure for your STOCK SE Heavy Breather (K&N) Air Filter. Specifically #5. "Oil the filter" on page 138. Hope this helps. Ride safe.
