That’s such a well written ending. The protagonist finally got the antagonist to feel fear which sort of puts their pain on equal footing but at the cost of the antagonist’s family being manipulated and traumatized. Revenge really is like that when you think about it.

I saw it more as his realization that he went through all of that revenge to not even get an ounce of suffering from the villain because he was right, as a psychopath they don't feel suffering the same as we empaths do. He hates the fact that he's doing the same things the villain did and even included the family into his revenge and he's so overwhelmed by all of his emotions, hence why he's laughing and crying because everything that he has done for revenge brings up all types of emotions. He feels even worse than when he started all of this and it leaves the viewers thinking that the protagonist wishes he never went through all of it in the first place- just for his fiancee's family to get caught in the gunfire and just for the villian to not regret and seek repentance for his actions. In the end the protagonist lost way more than what he gained from his revenge.

I feel like the idea of using the killer's family during the guillotine scene isn't to hurt them. They are just more victims to the game being played. Using them creates the only situation where the killer may feel a sense of remorse/regret for his actions. Had he not been a loaner psycho neglecting his parents and son, they wouldn't be there to tug at the door and drop the blade. He didn't need them in life until this last moment when it is life or death (ha). The shouts and misunderstanding and confusion between them really points at the missing connection. I see where we're coming from but the point of the film is how revenge warped Soo-hyun and turned him into a monster as well. In real life, revenge solves the lost feelings. The worst feeling is remembering the person who took from you is still going, that happens every time you think of who's gone. After retribution or revenge, whenever that feeling comes, it's followed by euphoria. An appreciation that you have balanced it out as much as possible. It's a good feeling that allows you to carry on with the rest of life. The mistake the guy in the film made was letting it spill out on to other things he cares about. That's just being too narcissistic to the point he forgets that it all affects everything and not just him. Good movie, daft protagonist. Obsession is not retribution, and revenge is barely ever destructive. It's just chemical, logical, and emotional balance. As with almost everything in life, stupid people ruin all forms of accountability, otherwise this would be obvious to anyone who's had terrible things happen in life. It's still just life

I watch it every now and again when I'm in the mood for some good revenge action but also in a mindset of accepting the darkness it washes over me as the story progresses. It would be higher on the rotation if it didn't come at such a heavy emotional toll but that keeps it raw. This film is a dark jewel with phenomenal acting and a story line packed with depravity rarely seen. All of that makes for a relentless ride through a cautionary tale. So much crazy + sinister = watching this makes me feel like I've been through the wringer but only AFTER I've survived a cocaine bear attack. It is not a happy ending but still so worth the watch.

When I first saw this film I LOVED it, I think it was on Netflix at the same time as Old Boy and I watched them back to back. This was such a lovely breakdown 🥰

Hands down one of my FAVORITE movies ever made!!! EVERYONE brings SUCH an incredible performance to their role.. Specially with Choi Min-Sik; going from his performance in OB to THIS was unreal.. It’s one of the few movies that’s intense violence doesn’t feel gratuitous… it ALL feels purposeful..it all builds the movie even more when u think after that opening it couldn’t possibly get worse... The lead (I forget his name) has also become one of my favorite actors. When I saw him pop up in squid games, I yelled out the biggest *DADDY* 😭 Even the guy who played the role of police chief.. his portrayal was EXCELLENT… every role in this movie feels carved out to the bone… They make u believe that these characters were real ppl…

Yeah I saw this movie a long time ago, and IMHO not only is it depraved but THE BEST Korean movie I've ever seen and great story! It's like watching the batman and Joker dynamic seeing this hero kinda like batman, good fighter and a detective, facing off against the villain who's kinda like the Joker, chaos incarnate and like some sociopath/psychopath who does what he wants regardless of destruction and harm he does. It's just incredible to watch! Highly suggest watching if you dare!

19:13 - I would say two things: 1. The protagonist and antagonist interaction seems like an Elseworld Batman vs Joker scenario. 2. Another movie that I remember portraying the cost, and the ultimate futility of revenge is Jeremy Saulnier's Blue Ruin. Highly recommend.

I think this movie really kind of mocks the idea of a revenge plan. It's clear Soo-hyun thinks he is enacting some kind of poetic justice, where every time Kyung-chul hurts someone, it brings even more suffering back to him. Maybe he wants to teach him some sort of lesson, maybe he just wants him to see that his lack of impulse control will hurt him over and over again. Either way, Kyung-chul just doesn't respond to it at all, learns no lesson, gives no second thought to anything but just keeps hurting people. He even begins to enjoy the game they're playing and is probably led to hurt even more people. Soo-hyuns plan was never going to work. It was completely ill-conceived from the beginning. He was trying to do something meaningful, create any sort of justice in a horrible situation, and there was just never any to be had. Just a horrible, horrible man doing horrible things.

Oldboy is my favorite movie of all time and berserk is my favorite media of all time. People forget how complex and philosophical revenge movies can be. Some of the most beloved stories of sll time are revenge stories. The count of monte cristo, hamlet, once upon a time in the west, oldboy, for a few dollars more, django, i saw the devil and many more. I see oldboy and i saw the devil as not only the peak of revenge media outside of berserk but 2 sides of the same coin. I recently wanted to watch this movie as a huge choi minsik fan and huge korean media fan and not having seen it. After seeing it now i think it is the polar opposite to oldboy and the rwo movies are intertwined. One is about minsik playing a wronged citizen who is psychologically tortured by a depressed villian whose own actions got his sister killed but decided to blame dae su for her decision. The 2nd film is about minsik playing the villian who is irredemable and actually wronged the protagonist immeasurably by taking everything away from him. In this film the opposite happens as the "good guy" takes his revenge out on the killer, in a law abiding citizen style way by beating gim brutally and then letting gim go in this cat and mouse game. Both feature choi min sik in opposite roles. Both feature revenge done by the villian in one and the victim in the other. Bother feature torture but with oldboy being mainly psychological and isawthedevil veing brutal physical torture. There are many more things that hinge these movies together but i think they form the 2 aides of the revenge tale together. The physical and the emotional. One is what happens if you could hold that emotion in and plan it and the other is what happens if you let it all out in a fury. Let me know what you rhink.

Just saw it. BRILLIANT BRILLIANT MOVIE. It shows perfectly how revenge doesnt always go as planned and you cant leave some lose ends untied especially with the devil. It was chilling to see how ruthless the protagonist became and how he broke down at the end knowing and realizing all that he caused and all that happened before. Everybody lost.

Hi Into the Depths :) I absolutely love your videos! One of my favourite movies is called A Bittersweet Life which also stars Lee Byung-hun . The characters are as complex as the ones in I Saw the Devil, but in a different way.

This movie is how I describe the difference between Asian films and American films when it comes to revenge. Most western films have described revenge as a bad thing. The protagonist usually loses a part of his soul in the journey or comes to a point where he sees his revenge isn’t worth it. Obviously there are some western films and books like Count Monte Cristo or John Wick.. but I believe those are so beloved because they are not the norm. This film is one of those that I constantly recommend.

Something I think gets overlooked with this film is its use of color. Contrasting blues and oranges bathe every scene, and do a lot to set the mood throughout the film.
