I Saw The TV Glow is a hauntingly beautiful and riveting kind of movie. It's not a movie for everyone, and I totally understand why some people cannot stand the movie. It spoke to me personally and I share some of what it meant to me in this video. This is not an explanation video. There is no "one-size-fits-all" interpretation for this movie. It can mean a million different things to a million different people, and that's part of what makes it such an incredible piece of art.
I Saw The TV Glow is a new movie from A24 studios, directed and written by Jane Schoenbrun, starring Justice Smith as Owen, Brigette Lundy-Paine as Maddy, and Ian Foreman as Young Owen.

I love that it's almost always night time in the movie, I didn't really notice until afterwards and would like to rewatch it with that observation in mind to see what it means.

spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler I can't talk about this film without talking about the end so spoilers ahead sorry! Also, I dunno anyone else that has seen this so forgive the wall of text. I just watched this movie bc i saw you made a video about it-- I came to this channel from the Severance video so I know Chuck has good taste This movie!! wow!!! IDC how they compare critically or financially-- this film is like Donnie Darko for this generation (imo, imo). Where Donnie Darko questions if we're doomed to a suburban life by fate, TV Glow seems to be asking are we doomed to be stuck in our own reality! Or maybe, can we live the life we imagined when we saw it on TV To me, the trans allegory is strong with this one, but the vaguery absolutely speaks to the broader inexplicable ideas: > shrinking from your own life/watching it go by > a gap in life stages/maturity where close friends can't understand one another anymore > going to bed past fucking 22:30 even after your dad died > self alienation when exploring yourself, being scared abt what you find (can't hurt you if you don't think of it) So much more-- And this is it, like you say, bc the movie is a backdrop for your empathy The abrupt end is because you KNOW he's buried in there and you hope and PRAY his only friend perseveres OR that he somehow saves himself It me thinking what-! we never got to see Owen run away, or transform, or say fuck you to his boss! And of course [if the film were to continue] Maddy shows up, tells Owen their new name and they sell his dad's house and move away to somewhere so luridly liberal it makes every day feel exciting like Pink Opaque so why didn't they show that! I felt like TV Glow was saying YOU the viewer have buried your childlike wonder, your dream of what the future could be-- your soul!! If we want Maddy to save the day we must throw a rope for a FRIEND's life If we want Owen to survive we must dig ourSELVES out! So powerful. I like that you think it's hopeful. I think Maddy doesn't come back and we've seen Owen is finds it impossible to come out of his shell But he's screaming, and that's a start.* We see soil I think, in his vomit at the end :( *when he meets Maddy again after so long and hugs them so tight... so moving. He's embracing the life he could have lived, the spark that he so admires and thought dead!! I think it's called the Pink Opaque bc like any shade of queer it's all pink triangle to the conservatives. And you don't know what the world is like on that side of the playing field until you take the risk. I was talking to an older gay at the bar who was saying in his days the gay bars were all blacked out (opaque)-- you had to be inside to know who was in/what was going on. Of course it can be generalised as The Unknown, that ultimate terror. When Owen tackles Maddy and physically runs from his problems-- they were trying to pull him across-- this is a step we can only take ourselves when we're ready We see Owen's chains decay when his parents pass, yet he remains trapped in his cage, watching TV (disturbing and jarring LG product placement... do they understand the fucking film??) and watching his life go by Yet the idea of Mr Melancholy winning sends him into a frenzy-- and it IS unacceptable for the villains of the world to win But in our current placated state (phones bad yadda yadda) maybe they are winning IRL, while we bury ourselves at work watching shows that'll be cancelled after two seasons for maximum profitability on our LG "Life's Good™" TV... beautiful film. Gives you hope for sure knowing there are other fully human people out there living the same beautiful struggle I need to think for a long time about what part of me lies buried + how we can set him free :) Look fwd to more videos. You could drop the quality by 200% and I'd still watch 👍👍
