Some thoughts on the age progression with some light spoilers (not really). Although I agree that the age progression and casting could have been better, I do think that Owen's appearance never changes until they are fully deteriorating at the end of the movie does add some depth to the movie's theme. I don't think this was intentional but when you have a movie where part of the theme is realizing that the outside you doesn't match the inside you, you do get a type of character that wouldn't work on their appearance. "Owen" is stagnant, frozen in time, for the majority of their life. "Maddy" is changing every time we see her at a new life stage, she is slowly realizing who she is and how to break from the life they live. "Owen" not so much. I liked young Owen's acting but I wish they had also brought a younger counterpart for Brigette Lundy-Paine. Just because it does feel weird from a film perspective to have one character have a younger actor and the other one not to have one.

HMmm thats a cool perspective. I think you’re onto something because you’re right Maddy is always changing so this couldn’t have been on accident. Thanks for sharing!

I just watch it 2 times on Monday and Tuesday and let me tell you, it's not a good idea to spend the work week with this film in your head. so I would advise not to do the same. I did get affected by it, the ending is gut wrenching in my opinion, with a little bit of hope in there as at least he finally looked inside of himself and found it's not empty and hollow as he thought but it seems he is also not sure what to do about it, I guess ther's a first step to every change. The final seconds in particular made me feel awful and keep haunting me. I'm not queer or trans so I can't really speak to that side of the movie but I know that feeling of not being comfortable in your own skin and struggling to express yourself and be confident so I identified a lot with Owen as all of my teenage years and well into my 20s I struggled with that, and in a way now in my 40s I still have those feelings of insecurity. So the movie really resonated with me. I can only imagine how much more difficult it is for people with gender dysphoria which I think this film helps to understand, or it did for me, and hopefully brings more empathy to the subject which really needs it. Justice Smith performance is brilliant and the imagery in the film is embedded in my brain for ever. I really think this will be a cult classic in the future like Donnie Darko and will be a generational film, or at least I hope so, I'd say you have to watch it at least once even if it doesn't connect with you I really think it will stick with you and that in my opinion is what makes a film great.

Damn thats an extensive and in depth analysis, thanks for sharing! Yeah honestly there are so many themes going on that it can really speak to so many different experiences that people face. So though i don’t relate to all of them as you kind of mentioned there are certainly others that i can relate to or at least feel moved as well.

I once saw somebody say the horror of this movie is less about the monsters or even the question of if the [REDACTED] is real, and it's more about watching life pass you by. It's like the Wrong Station Podcast once said: "I told them boys that horror doesn’t come from evil scientists, monsters, or even the screaming void of space. No, horror comes from right here, the heart."
@NerdyRambling

There is definitely truth in that. Thats why I usually don’t classify myself as a horror fan (as a genre) because most of them don’t have any depth. It’s surface level scares.

I watched it last night. I loved it. It didnt go as far as i thought it would in some places. The horror was really restrained. It was def a vibe and visually amazing. However I wont be supprised if it dosent land with everyone. Especially when the subtext clicks for you, if it does. But man it was really worth the watch.

I noticed the distinctly half assed aging effects, but I interrupt that as proof that Maddie was right. She's actually Tara, and this is all a cheap 90s teen tv show, with cheap 90s tv makeup effects. When you see it that way the casting choice for his younger self adds up to what we would see in an episode of Buffy or Are You Afraid Of The Dark, or Eerie Indiana or whatever odd creepy surreal shows you watched as a kid

I like that. Yeah the great thing about this movie is that it really can be up for interpretation. I don’t necessarily see it that way. But I’ll keep this in mind when i rewatch it.

I really wanted to love this movie I was anticipating it since its announcement, however I think it was waaay to vague. I was trying to pay attention to every detail and by the end it felt like I really didn’t learn anything. We learn nothing about the characters then they separate and never see each other again, I feel like the people who really loved this movie used it as a self insert but not bc the story was good,
@NerdyRambling

I can get behind that. The self insert part might be accurate. I still haven’t seen it for a second time but i’d be curious to see how it hits me.

I really want to watch this movie, from the trailers it looks classic arthouse/a24 and I love the premise of what this movie is going for. The color grading and the visuals alone in the trailer is enough to sell my film-making mind. Glad you had some enjoyment of the film. From the start I've heard that it was a masterpiece and now I've been hearing a lot of mixed reviews. Great Review!
