When you have a back story just as interesting as the story in the book itself you can’t help but be interested in it. My all time favorite artist though for the ManThing was Mike Ploog. Great upload Mike!

Savage Tales #1 has been on my To Buy list for literally decades. Not only does it have Man-Thing's debut with lovely Gray Morrow art, it also features the first story of the Femizons (Thundra's race), a Barry Windsor-Smith Conan reprint and the only appearance of one of Marvel's most obscure characters, Black Brother. Excellent history of Man-Thing and the other swamp creatures, Mike. Great price for Savage Tales #1.

That Savage Tales cover looked very familiar. Instantly I thought of the National Lampoon’s Vacation poster. Then I looked it up and the same artist who did the cover also created the poster.. Boris Vallejo . Very cool..

Hey Mike, great video. I have been a Gray Morrow fan since I was a young boy and he is at times forgotten. Interestingly enough, I spent the last couple of months completing my Man-Thing and Ka-Zar collections, i.e. all the Silver, Bronze and Copper issues in their continuity. Maaaan, that's an incredible deal!! I love Man-thing, and that ST #1 is now at the top of my 'Gotta have it' list. It's also worth mentioning that Monsters Unleashed #3 (also a magazine format) has the complete reprinting of Man-thing's first appearance in ST #1. Monster's Unleashed is also usually quite a bit cheaper than Savage Tales, in case anyone wants to read it. Great video, Mike!

WOW! Great deal! I was ten years old when Savage Tales #1 hit the stands. I forgot all that history/ DC/Marvel connections with our Swampy heroes. Have you ever seen the 1981 Swamp thing movie? It's very cheesy but was pretty good for a g rated monster movie in 81. Loved Ted AKA the Man-Thing in the MCU Man-Thing appearance in the WWbN short film. They really made him cool in that. Ironically yes the Bermuda Triangle actually cover the southeastern part of the Florida Swamp land too. A few passenger jets crashed there like twenty years apart 1972 and in 1992 a few hundred yards apart. Ghosts have been seen and heard there on tape. Saying their trapped in limbo there. Like a Twilight Zone time warp. I was on the ship the Iwo Jima I in spring of 86. In a terrible storm felt like this huge ship was being pounded on by King Kong.

Another aspect of the 1971 Swamp creature story was the the grandaddy of them, the Heap had a revival by the publisher Skywald in 1971, a regular color comics coming out a couple months after Swampy and Man-Thing debuted (Sept '71 cover date) but an origin story in Skywald's B&B magazine Psycho #2 cover dated March 1971. This was a new iteration of the old Hillman character from the Golden Age, but with some big differences. The color comic reprinted the story from Psycho #2 in color and added some GA reprints of old Heap stories. The art on the story in Psycho was by Marvel and DC veterans Ross Andru and Mike Esposito. They're all great books (my Savage Tales 1 is in much worse shape than yours, but I got it for only $10 about 8 years ago. I don't have the Psycho issue, but I have the Heap color issue. I had the House of Secrets issue in one of the old Silver Age classics reprint editions they put out int he 90s, but recently picked up a facsimile edition. Of them, Swamp Thing is my favorite, and I first got into the character in the 80s, when DC did the Baxter reprint series Roots of the Swamp Thing reprinting the Wein/Wrightson run, 2 issue per reprint issue. I then dipped into the main series just as Alan Moore was leaving and Rick Veitch was taking over, but went back and got all the Moore issues and the pre-Moore issues that had Phantom Stranger back-ups during the late 80s and early 90s. Great stuff. I like Man-Thing as well, but I haven't read a s much, mostly the stuff that appeared in Fear before he got his own self-titled series, and that stuff reunited Conway and Morrow on this first issue, coming out just a month or so after the Astonishing Tales issue.

Have you seen the trend of collectors cracking their CGC slabs with their fingers so they can read the comics inside it? And for protection they just put them in a top loader. And yes, there is a rising perspective that non slabbed books look better. Angelo of The Comics Den YT has been cracking slabs when he buys keys for his PC. He cracked the slabs of the first appearance of Hellboy, Spawn and Banshee with his bare hands.
