The story I've read is that Gram gave Leon a top hat that had once belonged to Al Jolson.

Gram could've made it big if got off drugs...but he couldn't help himself. His best chance was with Emmylou Harris but even she couldn't help. Such a waste of talent. I believe he and Emmy were secretly in love. He was in process of divorce when he died.
