As a Vietnam and Korea vet, I had to opportunity to travel throughout the Far East. I saw this exact same sign, clock and all, in camera shops in Osaka and Tokyo, Saigon, Hong Kong and Seoul. During that time and location camera shops were as popular and plentiful as Starbucks is today. Very cool sign, immediate recognition. That was OVER 50 years ago and those memories are still alive, well and vivid.

You guys are hilarious! Rule of thumb. In English the stress generally falls on the first syllable of a word. When it doesn’t, it usually changes the function (not meaning) of the word like pérfect (the adjective) as in “the pérfect house” and perféct (the verb) as in “We need to perféct our strategy”. It’s why we don’t need to use accent marks in English unlike other languages like Spanish where the stress pattern varies from penultimate syllable to the last syllable. When this pattern is broken, which is often, written stress marks are helpful. BTW, in Pete’s first language the stress pattern is very stable like English except it’s the penultimate syllable that takes the stress, thus no written accents required. Cheers! Nope, not for a while, they ended on bad terms as well but no one knows why. I don think Pete even mentioned it.
