I Should Have Seen This Coming...

Unknown quantities of dirt, rocks, and sand do not make for a great turning experience, and I certainly learned a few things the hard way with this one. For starters, the manufacturer of the casting resin, @superclearepoxy advised me to expect resin chipout when turning at high speeds, so I have grown accustomed to intense, hand-scarring resin shrapnel for the first rough shaping passes. (Hence, this was also my first time using gloves while turning.) In the past, I have had problems with carbide bits loosening, but I had never before had a carbide cutter break. So, my initial assumption was that I had hit a rock or a piece of metal, but nope, it was just super hard epoxy. @EasyWoodTools was great and replaced both the carbide cutter and the screw for free. I eventually resorted to an angle grinder to negotiate the dirt, and I knew there was more dirt and rocks potentially inside the piece. While hollowing the piece, I could tell that a significant portion of the material was dirt/sand/and small rocks, because there were very few clean cuts and lots of vibration. @Lyle , the manufacturer of the hollowing system, had some great advice for me regarding proper hollowing techniques, but we eventually agreed that this material was becoming unworkable and potentially unsafe. However, with the help of Starbond CA glue and TotalBoat epoxy, victory was within reach!

The idea of NOT hiding the "break". Opening the idea of broken to something better. Is the term you used for the Chinese/Japanese rapairs to pottery and the like ( not sure of the origin ). Looks exactly right. Don't hide "mistakes". Own them, and show how you learned from them. Love it. It's funny. A wood and faux glass pot actually can inspire. THAT is why this is great work. Not mass produced for profit. Uniquely made for pure love and demonstration of understanding and skill. Worth every moment watching.

When you added the gold resin to the part that was weakened it reminded me of kintsugi, the Japanese art in which gold is used to repair pottery. Which is also part of a beautiful philosophy to stay optimistic when things fall apart and accept flaws. This is a very beautiful piece!

I agree that it is gorgeous, and had I the tools, I would consider trying something similar inspired by this video, but I happen to love how tree roots look in their natural form as well and have a bunch of them decorating my cabin in the forest, both inside and outside :D All from trees that died on their own, or at least without me playing an active part in their death. Just like how I have a few decorative animal skulls from animals I didn't kill, since I don't kill any living being knowingly. But I still love how these skulls and roots look, and how wonderful nature shaped them for their function.

I have gained "supernatural" powers through reconnecting with nature, which I consider to be the will of life itself (the "fatherly" spark) given physical form and "born" in the ("motherly") material in this case, or in the spiritual, the thought. So yeah, if you would put it in words assuming the fatherly, that shaped started it, is god, you could say god shaped them. That's why art is subjective, and no one is forcing you to either like it or buy it, whether I think it's amazing (I do), or bizarre, or worth $5K to me, or maybe not to you. Or don't call it art, call it amazing craftsmanship, or don't call it anything at all. Just don't pretend it's still garbage or that the technique and work here aren't fantastic. I have a couple of projects I cherish that I think are worth a lot, my heirs and their heirs may not. Even da Vinci painted over many of his canvases or tossed them or re-did them. Now we wonder how could he not know their worth.... subjective, and time.

The patience you have in creating this beautiful piece. My dad had a lathe and as a child I did not appreciate what he might have been feeling as he worked at it. Whoa. This video brings to mind a story I read many years ago about a sculptor (Michelangelo, Rodin?) who could “see” a creation inside a block of stone before he ever even picked up the chisel. How you envisioned the vase emerging from that gnarled root ball is beyond my imagination. The whole process is an exercise in patience, creativity, and personal fortitude. Kudos.

There's a store in Wilmington, NC called Eclipse Artisan Boutique where artists, both local and otherwise, have their work for sale. I always go in to look around because they have the coolest stuff that you won't see anywhere else. I've bought a few things there and always get compliments from visitors to my home. The boutique would LOVE to have something like this on their shelves! I also want to say that lathe work is very meticulous with safety being number one. You are quite the visionary and do beautiful work!
