While word order matters, even if you switch it up people will still understand what you are trying to say, I myself do it often as a native speaker, in both languages, especially since i use english more than hungarian, the "downside" is you will just sound more like Yoda. (whom as a fun fact George Lucas made a hungarian technican on set translate his lines to sound more "exotic")
@jccbm

Yeah, English word order is quite set, altering it is mostly poetic and artistic. But that's one the advantages of noun cases, in English "The boy eats the cheese" and "the cheese eats the boy" are two completely different things, while in Hungarian you would still know who really ate what.

A fiú eszik sajtot. - It is the boy who eats cheese. (If you put emphasis on the _eszik_ this can also mean The boy does eat cheese.) Sajtot a fiú eszik (és nem a lány). - It is the boy who eats the cheese (and not the girl). Eszik sajtot a fiú. - The boy does eat cheese. I think @jccbm you are missing the whole point about agglutinating. This is not a surprise since duolingo gave you zero grammatical explanations, but to actual explain the difference, in English word order matters in defining things like the subject and object of a sentence. However, in Hungarian the same thing is purely defined by suffixes, so you don't need to rely on word order to determine what the subject and object is, and that means you can mix up the word order to subtly change the meaning without losing track of the overall meaning. However, by changing the suffixes, we can create the exact same effect as in your example: "The boy eats the cheese" and "The cheese eats the boy" In Hungarian it would be the following (and I have highlighted the suffixes for you) "A fiú a sajtOT eszi." and "A fiúT a sajt eszi." Exact same word order, but completely opposite meaning based on just changing which word gets suffixes. This is why ultimately you can still say "A sajt a fiúT eszi." and in overall meaning it's equivalent to "A fiúT a sajt eszi.", but like others mentioned the word order defines what you are putting emphasis on. I guess without being actually taught how to agglutinate, it's pretty horrifically difficult to just pick it up. Duolingo didn't even bother to highlight prefixes or suffixes for you, so you had like zero chance.

I watched your fourth video in the past few days. I have to say, I have never seen anyone who could grasp and sense the rules of the Hungarian language as quickly as you. Hungarian is an incredibly logical language and at the same time one of the most flexible in the world. Its grammar is highly structured, but much more complex than in other languages in general. The word order of sentences carries additional layers of meaning. The further forward a word is in a sentence, the more emphasis it carries. What is more important from a semantic point of view is placed earlier in the word order. It can be very difficult to understand and sense this for those whose native language is not Hungarian. So, congratulations on your achievements. It's impressive how you do it. And as a Hungarian, these videos are incredibly entertaining. Thank you! Keep up the good work. And I wasn't just referring to Hungarian. You produce very entertaining content. Respect!!

If you learn basic nouns it will be a lot easier to learn the complex ones. Like rendőr, it comes from rend (order) and őr (guard) if you learn those biasic ones, the complex one became easy to learn.

In Hungarian with word order you can define what you want the weight to be put on. You can specify the importance of things but actually many times they mean totally different things: A kutya húst eszik. = The dog is eating meat. Húst eszik a kutya. = It is meat that the dog eats (and not something else). Eszik húst a kutya. = Meat is something that the dog eats. Like you specify that it is a normal thing for a dog to eat meat... why wouldn't it eat meat? A kutya eszik húst. = The dog eats meat. Could be when someone offers you meat and you respond with saying that it is not you but dogs that eat meat. Also with what intonation you say one sentence matters too, they can alter the meaning.. But as a foreigner you can get away with not being able to conjure up a sentence with exactly the right word order for that exact thing you want to say or correct intonation. We will read from the context. Hungarian is a pretty "natural" language, it is more intertwined with reality.. I guess. I have no fcking clue what i am talking about.

11:25 you can basically interchange the words within a sentence but you are saying differint things. For example if you say "szeretem a sajtot" you are affirming that "I like cheese" but if you say "a sajtot szeretem" that means that you put a contrast, a reference that you like cheese RATHER than something else. Same for the first sentence "finom a sajt" = "the cheese is delicious" vs "a sajt finom" = you highlight the cheese to be much more appropriated than something else. First of all I excitedly cheered on along with you. Thank you for this video. You don't want to know this, but the hungarian sentences have diferent meanings based on the order of the words. Aaaand also the meaning can change based on wich part of the sentence is stressed. So you have a sentence that is written. Based on that you cannot be sure what the other person means. We analyse sentences in school. We analyse poems in schools. Here is an example (sorry): Iskolába mentem. (no stress) I went to scool (once or with the purpose of going to school). Iskolába mentem. (stress on "iskolába") I went to school (e. g. not to a hospital, once or with the purpose of going to school). Iskolába mentem. (stress on "mentem") I went to scool (e. g. I wasn't carried, once or with the purpose of going to school). Mentem iskolába. (no stress) I went to scool (in my life or in general). Mentem iskolába. (stress on "mentem") I went to scool (in my life or in general, but I reassure you that I did do so). Mentem iskolába. (stress on "iskolába") I went to scool (in my life or in general, not e. g. to a hospital) I am 67% sure that that is correct. Also the I is locked in "mentem", but you can "free" it and you can play with it or regret that you were born in Hungary at a grammar test. Again: sorry! If you are still here, here is a cookie. It is elutasíthatatlanul jummy.

At 15:51 the word order is wrong because although it doesn’t metter at most cases, when it comes to questions or negatives, the word order changed the meaning slightly. You have to take into account what the “nem” is referring to. The negation should be next to what we deny. The sentence is denying we are inside but not that we are chatting. So “nem” and “bent” sticks together. “Nem beszelgetek bent” means when im inside im not chatting.

What you said, Hungarian is similar to Latin in terms of format, you were right. Our sentences often constructed in a way what we want to put an emphasis on. For example: A tanárok a magas fa előtt állnak. - The teachers are standing in front of the tall tree. (This is just a general format with no particulat emphasis) A magas fa előtt állnak a tanárok. - "In front of the tall tree are standing the teachers" (In this was you put emphasis on the tall tree, therefore the teachers are standing in front of that and not something else) A magas fa előtt tanárok állnak. - "In front of the tall tree the teachers are standing" (Here you put emphasis on the teachers, meaning it's indeed teachers are standing there and not someone else) Tanárok állnak a magas fa előtt! - Teachers are standing in front of the tall tree! (Here you put even more emphasis on the teachers because it's an exclamatory sentence, meaning teachers are in front of the tall tree what is a surprising fact in the context) Same way when you make a question. Depending on the emphasis is the thing you want answer for. A tanárok a magas fa előtt állnak? (You want to know where the teachers are standing, in front of tall tree or somewhere else) A magas fa előtt tanárok állnak? (You want to know who are in front of the tall tree, teachers or someone else) So yeah, Subject/Verb/Object is mostly present in general format, but sentences can vary in word order depending what you want to put the emphasis on, but that can be only known from the context.

Duolingo actually teaches 3 additional languages. There is a Spanish to Catalan course, a Spanish to Guarani course, and a Chinese to Cantonese course. Ballsy but extra challenging Edit: I saw you already did Catalan and Guarani in other places just not in this series. But Mandarin to Cantonese is stupid hard

11:16 - yes, somewhat flexible, but not always: A sajt finom. = Finom a sajt, it is totally the same, but the 2nd format is used much more often. First format would be used if: The cheese is fine (but not the apple) = A sajt finom, de az alma nem. And there are also slight differences when which to use, depending on the situation. Szeretem a sajtot: I like cheese. A sajtot szeretem: Cheese is what i like (not i.e. apple) - emphasis is on cheese.

Yes, we are always happy to see people suffering by our language. :D We are barely known worldwide, so it's nice and funny, when others are trying out or beautiful language. Anyway, you did a great job! ^^ Ours are a hard one with the complicated grammar, but after you got into it, you can see, how everything makes sense. Well... almost everything. XD At least we don't say "raining cats and dogs" you know... we say "raining as if it poured from a bin" HMPH! XD

Man, you are a legend. Not just because you put so many effort to learn, but the video edit with all those meme snippets, flawless. And as others already said, you pronounced most of the words perfectly. You can clearly see now, that Hungarian is so different than other languages and why it is hard to learn, but it is true for the opposite direction too, we have difficulties to learn other languages for the same reason. E.g. in English, if we overcome the non gender neutrality and the fixed word order, it is still confusing how to pronounce some words, since we have phonetic alphabet, and basically what you see is what you get. Of course International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) can be handy, but it would be much easier to read what you see and don't think about how to pronounce it. Why on earth the word "color" written with "c" if you pronounce it as "k" and why on earth the "w" exists if you pronounce the same as "v"? It seems redundant and doesn't logical at all.

@@etruscanetwork Don't speak about thornography! ;) @jccbm You've absolutely nailed it, dude! The Hungarian course is spoilt by those exreme sentences that are gibberish even if you understand every words. The levitating kindergarten teachers and the postal workers (postmen, guys! Postpersons if you want to be so funky PC!) make it so extremely difficult. These examples even ruin the learners' ability to pay attention to the structures they learn. When the course started I tried to give some support but even I was confused by the sentences that had nothing to do with any kind of real world scene or usability. Thinking funny helps learning. But thinking stupid doesn't.

As a Hungarian, some of these sentences are really strange XD I would put some indefinite articles here and there, tbh. Also. Pro tipp: word order is not set in stone. Changing the word order, mainly bringing something to the front puts emphasis on a different word or expression.

Congrats from Hungary, this language is hard for everyone except for the people whose language comes from the ural mountains. The order of the words the o ó ö ő and the u ú ü ű, a á, e é and stuff like that are hard to pronounce and learn. And yes every order of words pretty much has a different meaning (but sometimes it isnt really a sentence that has a meaning if you put the words in a certain order ). Again, well done from Hungary

Congrats man, you got through it better than most would have. Hungarian has quite the reputation for being really hard to learn, but watching all 3 vids I have to say you did quite well. As for your question on word order, yes you can kinda mix and match, but putting something forward is often used for emphasis, for example: Keresek egy autót - I am looking for a car. Egy autót keresek - A car is what I'm looking for

A general rule for word order in Hungarian is that you put what you want to emphasize the most in the front. When you want to emphasize the subject you use Subject-Verb-Object order. For example: Én viszem ki a szemetet (I'm taking the trash out.) emphasizes that I am the one taking the trash out not anyone else. When you want the emphasize the act being done, than you put the verb first and leave out the subject all together or put it behind the verb. Kiviszem a szemetet or Kiviszem én a szemetet. And if you want to emphasize the object then you say: A szemetet viszem ki.

Maaan, you are fighting. Sorry but it's so funny to see you suffer. I just want to say that, even hungarians are suffering... If I wouldn't be hungarian I wouldn't learn it, so RESPECT. Just to add, yes, you can change the order of the words, but the stress will be on the first phase. And you are just getting into grammar. We sometimes just have so fucked up logic (but still somehow it just makes sense at the same time), but on the other hand I feel like this language just gives me so much freedom. I love it, but at the same time... I wanna cry sometimes too... I feel you. I'm happy that you looked into our unique language and thought process. I hope someday you will continue. Wishing you more luck with other ones.
