What people miss with the show is that Night City is a meat grinder, luring in people with the dream of "making it big" or "becoming legends" only for many to be consumed by the greed and violence. The best thing to do is to use Night City and leave, not to try making a living in it. Edgerunners is actually a bittersweet ending, because despite David dying he beat Night City. He spat in the face of Arasaka, beat Cyberpsychosis, saved Lucy from a terrible fate and made enough money to send her to the Moon. His love for his mom, his friends, for Lucy; all of those things are what gave him the mental and emotional strength to use the Sandevistan and the Cyberskeleeton to such an extent. Its what no soulless corporation could ever achieve, for corporations cut away humanity for profit. Corporations can never conquer the indomitable human spirit. What made David "special" wasn't that he was "built different" or was strong enough to take on everything Night City can throw at him. David was special because despite being born in that shithole of a city, he kept his humanity; he was the diamond in the rough. The ending is depressing not only because of the tragic ending to David and the crew, but because we knew that this was their fate living in a world like Cyberpunk 2077. Its a warning of what's to come if we don't change the course of the future, and its a reminder of whats truly important in a superficial world: the people we love and our time with them.
