As a Xerneas lead, I personally don't think Metagross is really that bad to face. Shield once, build to two Close Combats and then either throw one or two and then dip. By the next time Xerneas comes back in, the switch timer should be available again. Shadow Metagross actually dies to two Close Combats from Xerneas (regular Metagross survives), so you're guaranteed to win at least one shield back, which for a "hard counter" is really not too bad. Xerneas lead really doesn't mind steel types. Pokemon that resist Close Combat (Landorus, Mewtwo, Ho-Oh, other fairies) are way worse than Metagross, IMO. Obviously, if Xerneas isn't the lead, things change a lot, but there's a reason I only use it in the lead.

I have a level 50 shadow one with 14/15/15 IVs. It’s excellent, but I sadly lack things to put it with for master league. The XL candy grind is a slow one…

Get your megas up. Once the mega system changed I put in the time to grind the mega levels for every type. You can do 400xls on every com day 100-200 xls on a spotlight hour, and grind one week of an event hard and you make inroads into everything

Gyarados is a start. If you just walk it as your buddy and turn Adventure Sync on, you'll get XL candy for it very quickly.

if you purify that you’re insane, shadow metagross is the strongest steel raid attacker and the 13 def is negligible in the master league. You will never encounter a scenario where the extra two def will prevent you from dying from a fast move.
