This puts into perspective how big the KSP map is. Think about it, if you're not at some easter egg, or some launch site, you're almost guaranteed to be in a place where no other player's spacecraft has ever been.
@Buffalo_Soldier5 ай бұрын
It's pretty small compared to real world, but real world is huge, so it still makes it pretty big. Playing with real solar system mod teached me that vertical ascend and horizontal acceleration don't last same amount of time, it's not even close. In vanilla game you just accelerate vertically/diagonally for 1 minute and then horizontaly for minute to reach 2.3km/s. In RSS instead you ascend for like minute and then next 5 minutes you try to reach 8km/s, crazy.
@tomsterbg81304 ай бұрын
Yep, the massive issue with massive maps is their massive storage space requirement, so i guess there can't really be detailed AND massive planets. Unless you take the Minecraft approach, but even that is terrible because once you generate it, it saves...
@Buffalo_Soldier4 ай бұрын
@@tomsterbg8130 no, your idea is actually good. Minecraft must save chunks, because you make changes to the world, but in kerbal you don't change world.. so procedural world generation would be very good method to add detail. By using the same seed each time you guarantee that features stay in same place, but you don't need to save them, you can re-generate them from same seed using same "random feature" function. I'm pretty sure that's how scaterrer mod works. It doesn't save location of every rock and tree. Planets for kopernicus mod often have problems with uneven ground, because planet files can only have so much height points... but I wonder if they could procedurally smooth terrain... Maybe it already is how it works.. I don't know much.

Some tips for you: 1. Turn off SAS while driving. A well desigent car will be stable on Kerbin gravity levels. When you have airtime for some reason and you see that you wont land on your wheels turn it on, to steady your vehicle. 2. Turn off some of the wheel motors to reduce top speed on tricky terrain. 3. The car design should have: high ground clearence, low center of mass, high mounted lights and most important: seatbelts for your crew !!! If I ever try this myself I will use Mechjeb rover-autopilot. Its probably cheating but so much more convenient for long travels.

11:05 so what you're describing is that drive key is the same as "pitch down" - you can get around that by turning the reaction wheels, not SAS, off when you're driving, although I can't tell from the video if you're actually using reaction wheels or not. But reaction wheels are very handy for crash situations. What I do is bind an action key to be able to toggle reaction wheels on/off, and leave them off when driving. But if I catch some air or start flipping, I'll switch them on and if I'm lucky and fast can regain control of the rover and at try to land on the wheels level to the ground. The stronger the reaction wheels the easier it is to get control. I've found it to be a pretty useful technique overall.

If you want to drive without introducing a pitch-control input, you can use the translate up/down keys (K/I) to drive forwards and backwards, respectively, without affecting the pitch controls. It also helps to momentarily toggle SAS off and then back on every so often (with SAS enabled, tap F), since this resets your target attitude to your current attitude, which means your reaction wheels aren't trying to hold you in an orientation that happens not to correspond to that of the ground under you at the moment.

I have an idea on how you can get them home... first I need to know if the jeep fits inside a Mk3 payload bay. If it does, build a shuttle cockpit, a liquid fuel tank, a MK3 crew cabin, and a payload bay and ramp into a fuselage. Then fill your wings with fuel, and either use the wheasly turbofan or the big ones attached to the wings and/or fuselage. If you don't think it will have enough gas to get back, bring a basic ISRU kit and use it there. Also bring struts. You can build struts while EVA with an engineer and they can help hold things in place. I also have a plan for if it's too big to fit in a MK3 payload bay.

@@sidspooki alright. My next idea. In the SPH, build your cockpit, furl tank, and crew cabin. Then take mirror symmetry, a cubic octagonal strut, then the MK3 payload bays, placed sideways with their open limit set to 60%. While in use, make sure to never open or close the payload bay doors as you will effectively collapse the hangar we're building. Not move them so the lips of the lids barely touch each other and then use some adapters to smooth out the transition into the smaller fuselage. I personally use the MK2 cargo bays, placed sideways on top and bottom on the end as doors, but I'm usually using it to hold small spacecraft for repairs and scouting missions. You actually have the DLCs so you can use the hinge pieces to make yourself a door. Now close the MK3 payload bays and strut across them for structure before opening them again. And then use the structural wing pieces to build wings and mount engines and you should be good to go. I like adding the MK2 liquid fuel fuselages to smooth out the lump caused by the doors and to add extra gas in the tank, so to speak. It also allows you to mount some lights for inside the hangar. I actually have an interplanetary carrier ship that uses this hangar design if you want the craft file. It's one of those things where you make it, and you're so proud of it and want to share it with everyone like you're a kid again. Just give me your email and I'll send the craft files your way. Oh, disclaimer: the space operating part of the craft file has 860something parts, so it's not for the faint of computer. And make sure the lander cans are filled because that's the control point.

That is a super good idea! I'll take the craft files too so I can get a good look at it and design my own version. My email is sidspooki@gmail.com! This sounds super cool!

You should do some sort of skyhook rescue. First send a rocket/plane to send the actual skyhook to them, and then launch a second mission with some sort of design to catch it and dock midair and bring them back

You should make a rescue mission to bring them back but the longest way back possible: do a fly by of Eeloo.
@sashabraus94222 жыл бұрын
If you ever want to get them back, I'd say make a plane and attach some parachutes to it. Then blow up the plane so only the car is intact and just parachute it down. These little fellers deserve an epic welcome home.

Thats a fantastic idea! We're almost done saving the car, but ill definitely use this in the future next time we need to bring someone home!

Remember guys: he could've built a massive rover, but he chose the small, cramped, uncomfortable and no-toilet rover.

Reminds me of the Kerbal Polar Expedition. Of course, you went all the way to the South pole, but nevertheless.
@BenSmith02 жыл бұрын
Protip for rovers: The RAPIER's odd COM location (it's located outside the collision boundaries of the part) can be exploited to lower the center of mass of your rover too. This will add quite a bit of weight; but, done right, can make your rover virtually unflippable, and even self-righting.
