Seriously about the otters though, how are they never significant? I feel like they're a big enough animal where they'd have to be significant. Pretty much the same size as a cat. I did a double take when I read that part while re-reading the series awhile back. But I guess deer are also confirmed to live in the old forest in the first arc, and no one talks about that either. Actually, I think I remember them hearing literal wolves howl in the distance once, on the way to the mountains (which aren't that far away from the lake). Literal wolves. How is that not the most terrifying thing ever to them? Like a whole pack of "bigger foxes"? And yet it's just casually mentioned.
