Big thank you to Herman Gilligan for taking this interview.
Nick Drake may have been one of the greatest songwriters & underrated artists of the second half of the twentieth century.
In this interview, I had the esteemed opportunity to speak with Herman, who miraculously met & spoke to Nick Drake.

Hello guys; I got to know (and in Brazil I think a lot of people) the work of Nick Drake through a Clothes of Sand rendition on the Stonewall Celebration Concert (beautiful) album, by Renato Russo. Nick's records are absolutely stunning, inequalable.

What a lovely story - I wonder if anyone has a full list of the live shows that he actually did? just got the excellent new book (probably the best I have seen on Nick) and it is a whopping 500 pages plus and authorized by his sister too- Highly recommended!

Thank you - lovely story - I despair at the loss and that Nick Drake never knew how much appreciated his brilliant work would become. I stumbled on his work and story via an Australian tv documentary around 1999-2000 - glad I did.

Enjoyed this little tidbit about Nick. I would give almost anything to be able to go back to this time and watch him perform live.

Thanks for sharing this experience with Nick Drake. Everything about it fits with the accounts I've read elsewhere--the shy, quiet, seemingly awkward Nick being so uncomfortable in these social situations and on stage where he was inevitably aloof, unable to connect with the audience except in his singing and playing. So poignant, sad, tragic, and in keeping with the beautiful melancholy of his songs. Songs that became increasingly despairing, raw and harrowing.

It's a bit misleading to say the Volkswagen ad was the big thing that amplified Nick's popularity. He gained a lot of popularity in the early 90s (UK) when I first heard starting listening to him - I think there was a release around then - the Heaven in a Wild Flower compilation for example.

You’re totally right. Mojo magazine did a cover story on him in 1994 when the Way To Blue compilation came out. That’s when I discovered him. At that point still very much a word of mouth thing. I guess the VW ad brought him to the hipsters and the public at large. There’s some wonderful interview footage on here of his close Uni friends from about 20ish years ago. Very interesting as they talk about him so much less reverently, which of course is the real thing.

Thanks for posting! Not much of a story, but I think that's all an outsider to his close circle of friends would get out of this anxious and sad young man. Not only that but his anxiety level regarding performing in public was probably off the charts so talking to a stranger wasn't something that would help the situation. I would have been a happy camper after that brief encounter too. ❤☮🌎

It's not in any of the literature that Nick ever travelled to Canada. He certainly never went to America although he had a visa for a trip that never happened.

Evan Parker and John Stevens played as the Spontaneous Music Ensemble at Les Cousins in July 1967. 'bumpers' was the name of the second compilation by Island Records, and came out in 1970.

Les Cousins was in Soho until the 90's before the whole area lost it's vibe and became the same as the rest of the West End. That was a great little story and I humbly claim that Nick Drake was the Hendrix of acoustic guitar. Listen to 'Three Hours' and tell me I'm wrong! All the best, Charlie.

Thanks for the message Charlie. He’s HIGHLY underrated as a guitar player. What a shame he never had the chance to receive the praise he well deserves.
