I'm agnostic, but I was raised in the Church, and this is my favorite hymn. Sometimes, the idea that there might be a God out there who loves me in spite of the fact that I'm an incredibly flawed human being and wants the best for me is all that gives me hope.
@Darkstea1th5 жыл бұрын
I was raised in the church as well, I've gone through long bouts of inactivity and in those times my thoughts and feelings were different than when I was active. It was never the church or church members that helped me gain traction again and feel again but needing God in my life and pushing to reignite my relationship with him and to feel his love. It took work but he always was there waiting with open arms to love me if I would just love him by following his commandments once more. Then the Joy, hope, and love would poor into me and I would remember how amazing his love feels when you reach out to him. There is no imperial evidence to prove his love but it's the truest thing in this world.

I grew up LDS, with many active ancestors. Going to church became “another Sunday morning” and singing hymns felt mindless at times. For many of my younger years, I would wonder why this was such a popular hymn. A couple of my sisters favorite hymn, even. I always read the lyrics rather than singing, and tried to imagine what they really meant to me, in literal and hypothetical instances. Some days I would read words. Other days I would read a sentence that would change the entire outlook of my day and self, little glimpses of love and joy graciously offered to me by Himself. This song has grown to be one of my favorites too. We all know hymns of all sorts can feel campy if you’re being objective, looking under an audiophile lens, but reading these words always remind me of the love and grace abundantly offered to me/us, even when we’re not singing praise to the Lord (literally and hypothetically)

It is strange that so many members of the LDS church (Mormons) love this hymn. The writer of "Oh, it is Wonderful!" is Charles H. Gabriel who was musical director of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. He also wrote, "Will the Circle be Unbroken?", 'His Eye is on the Sparrow", 'Brighten the Corner Where You Are', and "Send the Light". These are just a few of the 7,000-8,000 hymns he wrote. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1982, 50 tears after he died.

There is not one single aspect of this hymn that is not in line with the doctrine found in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Not one.
@Artycloughiii3 жыл бұрын
@@Skinhorse61 The LDS church only worships Elohim, not Jesus. They declare Jesus and the Father to be two separate gods, but that they worship only the father. They also have a work-based belief where specific works must be done to be with the Father, for example sealing in the temple. The LDS faith does not allow for grace to cover a "rebellious and proud" soul. Section 64 of D&C refutes this hymn. "Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you," Moroni 10:32 According to the hymn, the ungodly practices of rebellion and pride are covered by the grace of Christ.
@Skinhorse613 жыл бұрын
@@Artycloughiii Arty...I firmly believe you have several misconceptions. If you truly are a seeker of truth, then you will meet with folks near you again. Bishop, missionaries, etc. Yes, we worship Jesus Christ. Of course we do! How could we not? He is our Savior! His grace is indeed extended, even to the proud and rebellious. He loves all. At the final judgment, Christ will be our Perfect Judge, since his Atonement and mortal existence makes it possible to understand us exactly where we are, in combination with all of our mortal limitations, weaknesses, and the desires of our hearts. All this WORKS vs GRACE focus is way out of whack. Too much...way too much...is made of it to keep us apart and fighting amongst ourselves. There is a balance in all things. Use logic, feeling, prayer, and the spirit to guide you to all truth. Try not to get caught up in the words of those who like to hear themselves preach.
@Artycloughiii3 жыл бұрын
@@Skinhorse61 I was LDS. I was a missionary. I went through the endowment ceremony. Can Christ blood's send you to live with God in the Celestial Kingdom if you haven't gone through the endowment? been sealed? paid your tithing? For Christians, who accept the words of the Bible, we know that we are saved and we know that the grace of Christ is sufficient. "8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2 I know that the LDS church continues to evolve and change their doctrines, but the fact is that the LDS church continues to teach that people will not live with the father without LDS church membership. Mormonism is about the church. You aren't supposed to use logic, the spirit and feelings to determine the truth. That's what Joseph Smith teaches. You are supposed to read the word (Bible) and use it as a standard to determine false gospels. You aren't going to find the truth about the Gospel listening to LDS revisions.
