That seems pretty reasonable. Ive stayed in cheap hotels all round the country and for the most part they're decent if not spectacular. Fine for a one or two night stay but any longer would be a stretch. The lack of hot water would annoy me but then again sometimes you just have to brave the cold for the sake of your hygiene. The trick is to aim the spray at your feet first and work your way up slowly tonacclimatise whilst singing a favourite song. You can usually tolerate 60 seconds of cold water, just long enough to feel clean.

So, I'm pretty sure this hotel is in the Pimlico area. Bunch of Georgian terrace houses that all look the same from the outside and have largely been converted into hotels of this scale. And I'm pretty sure there's some money laundering going on there. You want to try the Premier Inn in Hammersmith. A fire where I was staying forced me to book a night in this (barely) converted office block. My room was essentially an old office space on the corner of the building; lots of glazing, not much in the way of actual walls. Several single camp beds crammed into the space so at least I had a choice. Oh, and it wasn't even winter but bloody freezing. Can't remember how much I paid for the pleasure but it was a good deal more than you paid here, for what looks like paradise in comparison.

Brave man! Seriously, that was interesting- 50 quid for central London with breakfast is pretty good, to get cheaper you'd have to stay in a dorm room. Which reminds me, when I was backpacking on a near zero budget, in the 80's in Egypt I stayed in rooms for 75 pence and night with breakfast- the 50p ones were really grim! I have also stayed in noisy dorm rooms which had people arriving and leaving all night bashing into my bunk bed with backpacks which made the London room look like luxury! I'm sure renting a carpet cleaning machine and a quick wipe down of the walls would make the 50 quid rooms get more stars in reviews and would take a day or less. The cold shower, though, that would be horrible in winter- I'd make sure to bring a flannel and use the sink with lovely hot water (or the kettle)!

It's been a while since I booked a hotel room in London so I was quite surprised to see how ridiculously expensive a decent one has gotten in Central London. Found a cheap one for £60 a night and it was pretty much like the one you stayed in. Not the same, but very similar. Floor was very creaky, it smelled faintly of sewer when I left the bathroom door open, the toilet seat was wobbly, at night I could hear everything around me, including a very loud snoring guy in the room next door and some girls having a singing party above me. But the staff was friendly and it was clean, so I'm not complaining.

Amazing price. When in London I seem to invariably wind up in one of the myriad of tiny Edwardian-house conversion hotels circling Argyle Square across Euston Road from Kings Cross - St. Pancras simply for the convenience of getting around the city. I've had rooms not quite so bad as what you showed but at around twice the cost and none has included breakfast. Occasionally I've had a winner (but at ~£100) that proved to be pretty nice in that area. Next time in the city I'm going to look a bit further afield. Camden Town? Who knows...

I stayed at a hotel just off Oxford Street for £50 per night the first time I ever visited London, but this was around 15 years ago. The TV only had two channels tuned in, my bathroom (non-shared) was a toilet and sink which was on another floor, and if I stood in the middle of the room and spread my arms out I could touch two opposite walls. But it had a clean bed and a locking door, which is all I really cared about. I didn't go there to spend time in a hotel.

£50 for a hotel in central? I’d be expecting a cupboard under the stairs for that price! Or a cardboard box in a garden! That’s dirt cheap. And the fact they provide breakfast for the price too! I almost feel it might be the one that I stayed in for a few days this summer. Or if it isn't, it's certainly very similar. You've cleverly made it very difficult to fully recognize. Mine was a reasonably priced hotel near Kings Cross on a street beginning with G. The check-in was at the hotel next door and you had to go down to the basement for breakfast. The continental breakfast offered a fine array of cereals along with the essential breads and spreads and the coffee was surprisingly good! These reasonably priced hotels in the centre of London are a blessing when you have to find somewhere at the last minute. I think you did an interesting, non-sensationalistic and fair report.

You had a different purpose for being at a hotel than a tourist; you had work. But this works for a tourist who really just wants the basics because let's face it they will be out of the room 75% of the time. You just want clean bed, clean bathroom that functions and a satisfactory breakfast. If staying there gets you an extra day of museums, a west end theater or shopping because you split the cost of a £100 in half then it was well worth it. I wouldn't mind seeing another of these on the same theme. Well done!

Dodgiest place I ever stayed in was an Air BnB for £20 a night in the middle of the council estate I grew up on. It was converted from a three story council house and my room looked like the kind of place the Russian mafia hold their trafficking victims in movies. The shared bathroom was on on the top floor and looked like something from a 70s horror movie. I'm pretty sure I was the only person there, but I showered with the curtain open and my eye on the door. The following morning my friend came to pick me up and decided to go for a snoop around. The room next to mine, which I had taken to be another bedroom, was actually a very dilapidated living room with a big freezer in one corner. We opened the freezer and found every compartment was full to the brim with clear bags of unidentified, frost-burned meat which I joked was probably the remains of previous guests.

😅 I've stayed in worse and more expensive hotels in London. But there are always a few bargains even in Zone 1 for around 60 pounds. Simple but clean. Some with breakfast.
