At 12:21 those are to prevent falling damage, you can jump from ridiculous heights, but as long as you land on inverted triangle roof pieces you don't receive fall damage for some reason. It's just a faster way of escaping your base.

The pit building is to jump with out dying from up high. Like a waterless pool.

well not new player, sure ? :) purpose of the structure is to jump from very high inside without taking fall damage at all and so be able to come quickly from apex base on the ground in jumping directly on it.
