Singer/songwriter Peter Allen wrote this song in 1979. He was living in America and feeling very homesick. It has become an anthem for all Australian expats. Qantas (pronounced Kwan-tas) first used the song in an ad campaign in 2009 featuring various Australian Children's Choirs, changing the word Rio to Rome as it did not have flights going to Rio. In 2018, Qantas remade their ad to feature celebrity expats and the Qantas staff along with the various choirs.

This ad aired early 2022 when Qantas was able to travel internationally once more after Covid 19 subsided at that time. A lot of Aussies were desperate to come back home, and this to celebrate the occasion.

This was to celebrate QANTAS, pronounced Kwantas being allowed to fly again after 2 years of all planes being locked up in the Desert when COVID started. There are 14 years of QANTAS using this song and each one is different and beautiful. All on one KZbin video. Australians are travelers and we do not feel it is far to anywhere. No matter where we go or how wonderful nothing is as good as this song playing as we land at home. Australia always calls us home. Thank you.❤

They had to change the song slightly (only one word), as QANTAS didn't fly to Rio when they started using this song back in 1987, so they used Rome instead (the bit with Kylie).

QANTAS pronounced QW-ON-TS …Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services (Limited). This was the ad QANTAS released to promote travelling after the end of Covid lockdowns.

If you had increased the size of the ad it wouldn't have appeared so dark and difficult to watch and would have been far more impressive. We really don't need enlarged shots of you guys during if we can't see what you're reacting to. It's a great ad, one every Australian loves. The airline QANTAS is pronounced KWON-TUS. Decades ago Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise played brothers in a movie called Rain Man which received 4 Academy Awards. Hoffman's character was on the spectrum and was obsessed with QANTAS. The movie is worth a re-watch.
