Children's media has done more to explore adult themes than the actual adult animations.

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Gargoyles. And so many more kids' shows take children more serious than the "mature" shows for "adults".

@@hariman7727 i have same experience with "Adventure Time" adult oriented spin-off "Fionna and Cake". I'm doesn't hate it, but it have some problems. Especially because of the weird ending and the resolution of the arc of my favorite characters, Simon and Betty. Some say it was conveyed in a grown-up way, but for me and some AT fans, it was resolved too childish, inconsistently and confusing. Because blaming Simon for everything what happened with him and Betty's relationship (maybe it's because of "Ice King always lose" trope), when in OG series he was selfless person, who can sacrifice everything for the sake of others. Especially with protection of Marcy. And also, spin-off shows how he is very important person for his version of OOO. And in a finale it was forgotten. And also spin-off forget about bad stuff what Betty did because of MMS. And removed her agency. Because all of her choices were made by her own, without any permission from Simon or from their friends, like Finn. If story of how Simon and Betty met in "Jerry" were little different (like, showing Simon's sacrifices for Betty, not just Betty's. And removed at all this weird "student-professor" dynamic, what then turns into love. It's really awkward, because it's making us think that it was love between an adult and a minor) and using "Casper and Nova" metaphor in a right way, that will make a lot of sense. Yeah, lesson what Betty was trying to give to Simon about NOT wasting his life for becoming Ice King again because it's erasing her sacrifices, was great, but some quotes, like Beth's "You always choose Casper's ways", showing Simon through Casper as selfish, Simon's realization about "never find the crown" and forget about Marceline and positive deeds what he did with the crown (even when he was insane and forget about his previous life); Betty's "i have no regrets" with double meaning (first - no regrets about her life with Simon, second - no regrets about her bad deeds and mistakes), making me angry and confused me. For me, as autistic girl, was really frustrating. Because first eight episodes of F&C was really good, but finale was a weakest part of it. And it's sad when the love, what was pictured in OG series as tragic, where each of the significant other ready to do something for each other, turns into unequal power dynamic "adult-minor" relationship. It makes some AT fans (it's sad, that their criticism is ignored, even though we should all equally respect any opinion, whatever it may be. Negative or positive) really upset. And also spin-off forget about Simon's situation in OOO. His inability to move forward, like his friends. He can't open up his feelings about his depression and existential crisis. He can't communicate with futuristic humans and magical creatures. All of his threads of meaning of his life are gone. And especially his Ice King PTSD. In the end Simon just back to the start point, without any positive conclusion and without any realization from his journey. As one guy said, Simon should've regret more because of this "Casper and Nova realization". And also was sad about absence of Finn and Marcy. How neglect are they become. Where this friendship they were supposed to have? Why they doesn't start search for Simon, when he was gone? Why they doesn't care about him? Why OOO became such a depressing place to live, when in OG series it was fun, unpredictable and whimsical post-apocaliptic place? Not to mention about Fionna and Cake themselves. Their story for me was really good and making me care about them. Because i'm never like their stories in OG series. I thought that is a waste of time, what take so much episodes for Finn and Jake. But after this spin-off i start to like them. They are not just "Finn and Jake's copies", this girl and her cat are now their own persons. But, it was sad that their arcs were ended badly, but not so bad as Simon's. This were too troppy, clumsy and poorly covered. But lesson about accepting their now unmagical world was really beautiful (and some fans doesn't like it, because this OG magical F&C universe is gone forever). And battle with the Scarab was a waste of time. Sorry for writing. This thing can't leave my mind for months.

I absolutely agree with you. It’s more common now to see these type of adult-oriented content that just make you feel more depressed and awful that you’re an adult! Not just animation, but I still feel like it has taken the brunt force of it. It’s like finding a diamond in the rough. Currently, I’m in a state that I need to be more positive and the points you brought up made me realize that most of the things I’m drawn to revolve around negativity. Weirdly enough, I had a hearty laugh just watching the old animated bloopers of Pixar from the old days recently. They were silly and dumb, but I haven’t laughed like that in months. Maybe I should take a month off from everything and go back to watching kids stuff like you did Dragonfoxgirl. Thank you for putting so much effort into this video. You have no idea how appreciative I am to have this video come up in my recommended feed. I hope you and whoever’s reading this is having a wonderful day and I wish you all the best. God bless you 🙏

I definetly get where you are coming from. It's been a trend of certain western adult animation to just go for darkness all the time. It's probably why I was drawn to anime since it seemed to have much more variety in content and tone, even among shows for adults. There are adult animated shows that veer more hopeful whether that be in their tone or where their plots end up, but God it can be certainly hard to find sometimes.

I don't know why the majority of the adult cartoons at their end, a big nasty joke because have bad explict things and curse words. Adult cartoons should be more than comedy, but something for people to identify themselves that are going through adulthood or are in this period, a paralel to the feeling of watching good nostalgic cartoons in the childhood.

I think I had a similar moment, but in reverse in regards to My Little Pony. Broke me out of the trance of just constantly going deeper into a rabbit hole of negativity and reminded me the simple value of joy and hope. I cut a lot of the adult oriented content out of my life, and cut out some very toxic people too, simply from the gentle tap on the shoulder something positive gave me, and glad I never looked back.

I feel that recent years have really shown what animation can represent creatively. Just as how a design can show who a character is, animation can show what kinds of minds are behind it both creatively and authoritatively. We are at a mixed bag of content currently. I see remarkable ASTOUNDING works for adults or just something that can be enjoyed by everyone such as the latest puss in boots movie, Tuca and Bertie, Inside Job, Bojack horseman, Mitchells vs the machines, Into the spider-verse, etc. There IS good content for adults out there! But I feel it's sadly overshadowed by what's considered more important in a business environment: Money. Cheap cartoons with crap writing with simple designs that can be made quickly for faster release and faster bucks given for their success. The world of cartoons and art as a whole is going to entirely depend on what artists want to make and how hard their willing to work to make those dreams into drawings despite the claws of greed hanging over their heads. This is my prayer for the future of animation and art as a whole.

This is why I'm so into independent and older animation right now. The mainstream stuff coming out right now is essentially a dark age of animation. Look at CN, they decided money-by-any-means de-necessitates good daytime content.

I love Animation and the Artistry that goes into story telling, But I don't watch Adult Animated shows. I Love Animation as a Medium, and Stories like Treasure Planet that Take you to Fantastic new worlds, and Don Bluth's Work with Dark Kid shows like The Land Before time and All dogs go to heaven are my Jam. I'm An Adult, and Can Handle a great Deal of sadness. (I Am Also Somewhat Sensitive to this Kind of thing) But I Like Shows like Avatar the last Airbender because the Characters and Themes are Mature but still Kid Appropriate. I Don't like adult Animation because all too often if feels like I Have to be the Adult in the Room, While the Show often uses Juvenile Humor, Only this time with an "Adult" Subject Matter. Gore, sex, Violence and the like... I don't Know where I'm Going with this, Just you are not the Only person who feels this way. I guess My Favorite kind of Animation, is Animation for anyone. Kid or adult or Teen or whatever. Stuff made for Everyone.

Bluey is really good. I recommend it. I admit some episodes made me cry. The voice actors are actual children and the charectors are based on real people and situations the people working on the project have had with kids. If you can get past the first 2 episodes in Vox Mauchina it is one of the few adult shows that still has morals and the charectors all treat each other very well. Even the worse of them have development by season 2 and realize their faults. It's way less depressing than many adult shows as well. Just a classic complicated charectors fighting evil.

For the matter of that, I always question why modern adult shows are Adventure Time-esque scribbles. Why can't we have an adult animated show animated like a classic Disney film, but with adult themes? Why does "adult" stuff have to look like a 5-year-old scribbled it to life? Why can't we have more Primals? #MakeClassicAnimationGreatAgain

Sums up why I avoid most new media. Most of it rings hollow and pandering, and not even in an inside joke kind of way, but genuinely mean-spirited. Luckily there is a long history of media to rediscover (have you seen Russian animation). Sucks to be old and jaded and out of touch in your 20s.

I know a lot of people have been working through a shift in putting more focus onto positive and uplifting things instead of a constant cycle of negatives, myself included. It's why this year I started making "praise reports" every Wednesday, where I share some good news or something I'm grateful for, as well as a light-hearted video specifically geared towards unleashing a sensation of happiness. It can be easy to get stuck in a rabbit hole and forget the number of good things that occur or can be found in the world, especially when media thrives off of that kind of content. So every now and again, especially when I start to feel low, I attempt to step back and put my focus on light-hearted and happy things, and remember the number of blessings I have in my life.

People often wonder why I watch "Bluey", saying stuff like, That's a kids show, Its for Babies. I stop and look at so many options and say, isnt it obvious I watch shows to escape reality, not be reminded of it, that is to say that Bluey isnt realistic but it focuses more on happy and I want to be happy

First off, that's a beautiful picture and I feel the emotions from this particular video coming through in it. Secondly, I completely agree with you. Why do adult cartoons and animations nowadays have to show nothing but hopelessness? Why do we feed off it? It truly saddens me that nowadays people can't seem to enjoy a show where there's either a happy ending or at least a little hope in it. In these times full of negativity and hatred we should try to go back to the positive and hopeful side. We should not only feed off it but spread it around. We should spread all the hope we can. This was a truly wonderful video full of inspiration (at least to me) and wonderful advice for not only animators but writers as well. Keep up the wonderful work and God bless you. 💕

I can no longer enjoy any of my favorite shows or anything the same way anymore due to people tearing it apart to shreads and causing drama everywhere. It saddens me because I have nothing left to watch anymore and it feels me with dread......... It really does. I feel like I have no longer a escape from reality. Can people not be cynical for once? I can only listen to music when writing, but whenever I draw I listen to fictional stories. Might I suggest checking out Dark Somnium’s KZbin? Also when I look back at my childhood, I remember animated shows being happier, better at communicating worthwhile ideals, and mostly left you feeling good. They provided an actual escape from the real world. Seems like a lot of modern animated shows are purposely made to offend, anger, be overtly sexual, or just be shocking instead of focusing on good writing. It’s like the joy has been sucked out of everything. Even decent animated shows appear to progressively decline as the series goes on either because of influence from the fandom or because the producers/writers want to start not so subtly mixing in their own views of the real world instead of furthering the world they created. Anyway, that was an awesome drawing! I’m always amazed how great artists such as yourself make it look so easy yet it would take me a week just to work on an eye and by the time I begin to work on the rest I’d have given up lol

This was a great listen. And watch! The art piece was beautiful. But what you had to say had a lot of weight behind it, and I agreed a lot with it. My friends are so filled with nihilism that it's hard to talk to them about more serious things. Anytime I share dreams or my hopes they shoot it down and call me stupid for believing it or childish. It hurts. I have one or two friends that are not so pessimistic and it helps, but I had to learn to not listen to all the nihilism and hold on to my hopes and dreams despite my peers giving up. It's a bit lonely, but I rather hold on to hopes and be alone and give up with the rest.

Sure, there are hiccups and god-awful shows like Velma that i wish burned to the ground. However, i still feel like I have to give what I find interesting a chance so I can decide whether its worth continuing or not.

Honestly, its one of those shows that were MADE for people to get mad at, so I don't blame you at all. I will never watch it either. Ive found that most adult animation these days are just... Tasteless? Stuff like Smiling Friends and whatever Vivziepop works on, I don't really enjoy it. There's few animated shows these days focused on a more mature audience that isn't just trying to be vulgar for the sake of it. I will reccommend Legend of Vox Machina though. Its a pretty good show and, although I am not familiar with the podcast the show is based on (I am not good at listening to podcasts consistently. I'm still barely over halfway through WTNV.) it is a pretty fun watch. I think especially the last couple years have been very difficult on the collective psyches of a lot of us across the world. We're in some very, very bleak times. I do wholeheartedly agree with you that there should be more adult-focused shows that show that there are still things to be optimistic about; to be looking forward to a better future and such. I think a lot of people have allowed the stress of current events to drive them further down a hole of sadness and spreading pessimism. Its tough not to when we're constantly surrounded by and being fed so much horrible news on a daily basis. But there are still plenty of good things to look forward to. Will we ever know when any of that will come? No. But it is fun to still try and hope.. The experience of pleasant joy and surprise can really make someone's day. And the best part about it is that it can be felt over and over again.

I haven't seen Velma, but I can predict what it's like based on other spinoff shows and what you said in this video. :p Have you ever noticed how obsessed modern culture has become with taking down heroic figures and role models? It's like all characters, figures, and anything remotely lovable are all being turned on their heads so everything looks like a homogenous dystopian mockery of what it was 30 years ago. What if a real and true unicorn appeared in this world today? If anyone even noticed, they'd probably just assume it was fake. Or (just maybe) it would make everyone who saw it feel at least a little joy in their hearts for the rest of their lives. That would change a lot!

I actually plan on making an adult animated show that's a horror comedy. It also kinda satirizes the adult animation genre while telling a character driven story about the antichrist getting back in touch with his human side. There's just some adult jokes, bloody gory violence and sexual situations on the way. The usual suspects. I just wanna make something good that teens and adults can enjoy.

ill be frank, american animation lags far behind japanese animation when it comes to adult content, no not porn... actual made for adult minds to be entertained animation. look up the show danmachi, look up the show xambed, look up the show full metal alchemist, or the ancient magis bride, these are shows that dont rely on swearing and pop references to pretend to be adult the way family guy south park and velma pretend to be adult... be were really made with the mentality of teenagers in mind... theres more great storys than i have time left to recall them all in japanese animation... but everything iv said can be dismised with the term weeb, im just a weeb, i just like japanese animation regardless of quality... now... if that were true... id have mentioned shows like inuyasha... instead of recomending shows like chillin in my 30s after the demon king fired me.... if your sick of adult animation... then youv not seen all that it has to offer... but that means looking outside of america, much as i love my homeland, we often suck at making meaningful cartoon shows. with only a handful astanding out amung countless trash. ill be blunt about this, you stoped watching american adult cartoons, thats about 20-30% of whats on over if you actualy cared to look. refuse to cheak out any more animation and your fuckin up, becuase what america offers is a fraction of what japan overs, they know how to make compeling characters and stories there. paprika, ghost in the shell stand alone complex, princess mononoki, howls moving castle, terraformers, deadman wonderland, handyman in a new world, fist of the north star. theres more here to see, and if you insist on missing it, thats your mistake.
