This was definitely inspired by Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition in 1915. They're ship was stuck in ice and days later it sunk. Shackleton and his team set out away from the ship. They used escape boats to flee to a nearby island called Elephant Island. At Elephant Island they built a house out of the remaining boats while Ernest and 2 other sailed away to South Georgia to get help. While he was gone the rest of crew suffered in sub zero conditions. One crew member named Percy got frostbite in his toes and had to get them amputated. Ernest got help and had a steamboat from the Chilian navy to come save the crew. They're original ship that sunk (Endurance) was recently found in the weddle sea. Unfortunately Ernest Shackleton died 3 months after they're expedition ended. R.I.P Ernest Shackleton

I know the version you’re using doesn’t allow a temperature mod, but some other cool things you could possible add are leopard seals or elephants seals, some plants, their is also some grassy areas in the Antarctica even though it’s largely covered by snow. Another possible idea is add some features like ice spikes from original Minecraft.
