Paul there is a life hack for villagers. So if you open their trading menu they follow you around for about 5 secs. You can use this to set the autofarm easily

In case if Villages are disabled then Azalea trees are decent source of wood and the rooted dirt if you unroot it becomes also good easily accesible dirt (for desert standards at least).

Here's a tip for you: When finding your first diamonds, you only need to mine 5 diamonds. Here's why: 3 is for the diamond pick, and 2 are for the enchantment table. With the diamond pick, you can collect obsidian, but just mine 4. And if you have books, you can make many bookshelf to make the enchanting stronger, and with an iron, or diamond pick, get a fortune pick, and mine the rest of the diamonds for more diamonds.

I started desert flat, that was a huge challenge (8 layers of sand, 50 something of sandstone, 3 of stone, NO ores! 😮). I'm going to do a plain old desert tomorrow, should be much easier.

Desert is definitely a step up from Tundra as in tundra the food is large problem most of time on top of that Sugar canes are more difficult to Grow due to freezing ice. Desert is devoid of vegetation with exception of occasional Azalea tree.
