there are 2 neat things you could use to speed up the process of cooking and smelting. they're called the smoker and blast furnace. the smoker is made from 4 wood block(1 is made from 4 logs) and a furnace. the blast furnace is made from 5 iron ingots, 3 smooth stone, and a furnace.
