Dive into the life of Mr. Ngoc, an 82-year-old Vietnamese man who thrives despite decades without sleep. Located just moments away from my home in Hoi An, I uncover the remarkable ways he manages to live a full life under such extreme conditions. From sunrise in his lush rice fields to late nights distilling traditional rice wine, this journey is nothing short of astonishing.
We'll explore how Mr. Ngoc keeps his mind and body active, the impact of his insomnia, and the secrets behind his resilience. Prepare for a story of endurance and culture that challenges the very essence of human health and sleep.

I mean you would literally die if you didn’t sleep for too long, and it’s a pretty short span of time. There is actually a condition that makes it impossible for the person to ever reach REM sleep and they eventually die young. Edit: It’s called FFI (Fatal familial insomnia) and it’s extremely rare.

I have bouts of insomnia. Ive gone 6 days a handful of times. You get sore from never resting certain muscles. When you finally do start to relax there are tremors and 'jump starts' that wake you up again. Its like your brain cant remember how to shut off so drifting to sleep causes a panic reaction. Waking dreams hit you randomly that leave you disoriented and confused. Your eyes hurt. Zero energy and zero motivation. OTC drugs just make it worse and usually fuel more anxiety. I feel for this guy. I dont know how someone could get use to it but he seems to handle it very well all things considered.

I've stayed up for five days straight with zero sleep during a manic episode. I began hallucinating about three days in. I already had sleep issues and was used to staying up for a day or two at a time, easily. I could hear earwigs and spiders crawling on the walls and saw them pouring inside from a basement window (my friend had a basement apartment I was staying at for a few days). I even met up with a friend I hadn't seen in a few years and when he came over, he was concerned about my behavior. It's not fun. It's not just the hallucinating and mental unease, either. You start feeling like your chest is too tight and you can't take a good breath. It's just awful. You feel like you're dying, physically.

Surely he must take naps in-between. The problem most likely progressed from staying up late or all night. After a while the body acclimatises and becomes harder to feel sleepy by a certain time in the night as most would normally do. I have a neighbour who finds it difficult to sleep at night and it's because of the same habit of staying up late or all night reading or whatever. He's been doing it so long it's become ingrained. He would eventually go to bed around 3-4 in the morning and I hardly think he gets a good 1-2 hours of sleep if any. Ironically he says it's normal no matter how I tell him no it's not normal.

lol, "setting this entire motion in process" 💗💙💚 somewhere around or after 16 minutes i think. Andrew, I LOVE that you included his tobacco-smoking as a potential factor in his health. I don't know what formulations of tobacco products are mostly distributed around Vietnam, but I largely attribute the health-concerns and tarnished reputation of tobacco, to the modern handling of it, and myriad bizarre chemical additives unfortunately part of that modern commercial machinery. Tobacco, originally, and as a plant, is a very special medicinal blessing, and powerful factor of health. Real tobacco is good!
@DoomIIMaster
@DoomIIMaster 28 күн бұрын
"The tobacco plant, Nicotiana, has probably been responsible for more deaths than any other herb. At present, tobacco smoking is causing over 3 million deaths a year worldwide, and if current smoking trends continue the annual mortality will exceed 10 million by around 2030.1 Add to this the mortality from cancers caused by oral uses and the death toll becomes still higher. Undoubtedly, tobacco is the most important avoidable cause of premature death and disease in the world.2" - Journal of the Royal society of Medicine

Sleeping comes down to chemicals. Creatures can adapt in many different ways. I believe with the right training and disapline, you can get your body to rewire itself kind of thing to no longer need sleep. Studies were done on temple monks and they only need around 4 hours of sleep a night and they're fine. I'm pretty much the same way because I've fought sleep my entire life because it's a chore to me. I want to live life alot. So I don't live on 8 hours of sleep at night at all. And I'm fine. But napping is something I do. Micro sleeping. Aircraft controllers have rooms where they can sleep for 15 minutes because micro sleeping makes a huge differeance in your ability to think and function.
@lyrand6408
@lyrand6408 Ай бұрын
Arnold Schwarzenegger would have loved that. He said before in interviews that he thought sleep was one of the biggest waste of time in life. In terms of productivity (I.E. what you can do, or rather how much you'd love to do) he's right. Sure, sleep is essential for humans (the majority of us, that is). However, most of us only have maybe 12 hours a day of efficient productivity... and pushed beyond that it becomes tiring, less efficient, and even risky for your health (at least in the longer terms). We're not "made" to constantly do things, our bodies need rest. The condition of this man is indeed extreme, but something allows him to keep on going nonetheless.

It warms my heart to see him feeding his fury friend his own food. That is a wonderful man. Bless him Edit: it will probably be his beautiful wife that dies from lung cancer
