In order to maintain the storage of photos by year/month, I have used File Station, but cant figure out how to transfer them to Synology Photos in order to take advantage of the options it provides and still maintain the file structure. How large is your photo library? Unless all of your photos fit on your phone (and not just the little thumbnails) you can’t just sync with your phone’s camera roll. Likewise, unless your computer has a hard drive large enough to store all the photos locally, you’re going to have to do some extra work.

Great video, thank you. I still have tremendous issues understand Synology Photo. Given the following case: I have tausends of images categorized in folders. All those folders are within a "Shared Folder". I have several users that can read-only-access those images via their Windows PC. They can also download as needed. So, how can I make use of Synology Photo now giving those users the filter capabilities (search for people, tags, timeline etc.?). So far this is not possible - Just when I copy those files into my home/photo directory. When I copy them into the shared folder "photos" then not even I myself can make use of the filter. Thanks for any advise or am I the only one with this use case (SP plus network share?).

I’m so glad that people who are in their middle age are also being conscious of privacy practices by big tech. Kudos to you sir. I hope more people take their data privacy seriously and do not let big corporations (who are NOT your friend) slowly change the status quo. Personally I feel what apple has tried to implement is grossly unacceptable, first they will use an excuse no one can say no to, like protecting children. Slowly but surely they will increase the scope of their scanning to allow law enforcement and governments to take a look at your data without your consent. This is precisely why I was looking at alternatives to iCloud and switch now, and came across your video. Very well explained, thank you for the great content!

Would I export photos from Apple photo library directly into the Synology Photos main photo folder, or should I put them into a separate folder and upload them from within the Synology Photos app?
@QuikTechSolutions3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, you can actually drag & drop your photos right from your Mac into the Photo folder inside your Home folder in Synology’s File Station. This way the photo structure will be maintained.
@ingoknito93853 жыл бұрын
@@QuikTechSolutions yes, drag & drop is a solution. But, if doing so, the files are converted from heic/heif to jpeg and you loose life images. So, the better way is using the phone selecting the "picture backup" in settings. (Don't know the proper english expresison, my one is german) Then select "backup all images". But you can use a third-party tool as well, like photosync. The advantage of that is, that you can set an automatic upload when (connecting to a wifi while) arriving a specific address. The automatic upload via the Synology Photos app doesn't work properly for me. Asking the Synology Support i got the answer that this is an issue of iOS, so Synology can't do something on that topic. After a couple of weeks I have to say, that the solution with photosync works fine for me. After automatically uploading my images they are even indexed and ready to watch when you open Synology Photos app the next time.

@@ingoknito9385 Hi, thanks for this useful information. One question though, if you have a large photo library and you are using the option of iCloud Photos to optimize Storage, that means you dont have all the originals in the phone. When doing from the synology photos app the backup option, does the photos backed up to Synology are the originals (meaning somehow are backed up from the cloud itself to synology) or are they the lower res files stored in the phone the ones which are backed up? Thank you for the insight!
@ingoknito93853 жыл бұрын
@@kalkydra I did few backups of the iCloud gallery. First with moments, then with Photos. The files stored in iCloud were downloaded to the phone, then backed up to the Synology. Important to this is, that your phone has enough local storage. Example: if your iCloud gallery is about 100 GB and your iPhone has only 50 GB free storage left, only 50 GB are backed up. So it's better to use for example photosync because of the setting deleting photos after syncing. Also you can easily recognize which photos are backed up yet and which ones are not. Don't get me wrong, i am not paid by its developer. But, it's the tool which saved my ass many times. That's why I recommend it often.

If photos in Apple Photo are optimised then backup to Synology will be also be the same. If you want to have full size photos, you have to download them a) from iCloud with browser manually. Very cumbersome, takes a lot of time(if you have a lot of photos), you can’t quit browser or turn off computer while downloading, otherwise you have to start downloading from scratch again. One way is to download them by day or week at once. Also cumbersome, because you have to keep track what photos have you downloaded and what not. B) on Mac, download with Photos full-size photos and then back up them to Syno. If your hard drive is limited on space, move your photo catalog to external hard drive c) if you don’t want to move your catalog to other hard drive, make a new apple account with the same Apple ID and then there setting Photos app move your catalog to external hard drive. And let it download full size photos. d) on Windows PC download with iCloud program. Same here, if hard drive cannot take them all, save them to external hard drive. If you want to from “today” that all new photos will be copied full sized to synology, you can make it from Synology photos app. So all old photos won’t be backed up to Synology, but all new photos will be. And they will be all full sized. But remember that if you will do any changes to photos in Apple Photos the changes won’t be synced to Synology Photos. So you have to manually export them to Synology. PS! Optimised storage means that all photos what are older than a mont will be optimised. All photos what are younger than a month are full sized, if you have that free space of course.
