In today’s video, we go over a simple Bollinger bands trading strategy that one of our subscribers has sent us. If you would like to learn how to trade forex using the Bollinger bands trading strategy or you just want to know about its efficiency, then this video is for you.
We have previously made two videos where we trade forex using a Bollinger bands trading strategy, we have also tested a Bollinger bands trading strategy 100 times before. We have received many requests from our subscribers asking us to get their Bollinger bands trading strategy tested using an expert advisor. It’s probably the most effective way to test a trading strategy as all the trades are made automatically.
When we look at the Bollinger Bands trading strategy, it looks like a great indicator to trade Forex, the price seems to always respect the bands. So imagine if we sell when the price touches the upper band and exit when it touches the lower one. That sounds pretty obvious, right? How successful would be this strategy in your opinion? that’s what we will learn today!
A few weeks ago, we received a strategy from Asim Shaikh who’s one of our subscribers. He wanted us to backtest a simple Bollinger Bands trading strategy that has according to him a success rate of 90%. So far, he has been backtesting it manually using the replay mode and Excel spreadsheet.

It’s probably one of the most simple trading indicators that you can think of.

This strategy relies entirely on the Bollinger Bands indicator which is a technical analysis tool defined by a set of trendlines plotted two standard deviations (positively and negatively) away from a simple moving average of a security's price, but which can be adjusted to user preferences. Bollinger Bands are a type of price envelope developed by John Bollinger, the price envelopes define upper and lower price range levels.
So before you consider using the Bollinger bands trading strategy, remember to backtest your setup multiples times as this technical indicator can be misleading and might lead you to enter low probability setups.

What I would do: Put a moving average of 200 periods, Above the ema, you only buy when it closed below the Bollinguer band, and below the ema 200, sales would only be made when it closed above the Bollinguer band. The trade would be closed when a candle closed above ema200 a greeting

Thank you so much. Adding this indicator has helped me see what's going on a lot better. As a beginner you can definitely make some extra cash by studying and using the Bollinger Bands, and 8/9 (whatever), 20, 50, 100 and 200 EMA. Go between Heiken Ashi and Regular candles also. I like the 5 minute time frame. Trade the Nasdaq 100, Dow 30. Might work for swing trading, but haven't tried it yet. Good luck.

One intruiging thing about quants is that they aren't actually purely systematic. They tend to control the information fed into their algorithms when events that it cant understand occur. For example, a quant trading the EUR/USD in 2014 would likely flip the strategy due to divergent interest rates. So, keep this in mind whilst backtesting. Computers really aren't all that smart yet.

so did the ea analyze trends and go mostly in the most prominent trend direction because if an asset is on a overall down trend and keeps shifting down or up on regular intervals. You may trigger a trade on lower bb, then instead of coming up and hitting the top band it just returns middle band before moving down another stage taking the top bb with it. In a single backtest within 5 minutes the price shifted down 3 stages, taking the top bb with it. By time it hit top bb it was at a loss.... But if its a bot and the profits a lot more than the loses it would work nicely so lomg as your also willing to lose say the grand you risked, should first run hit a few trends wrong and end up in a spiral before running out of capital. But the advice about ea's was pretty valuable for a lot of people who don't know about them.

Without tuning up using additional indicators or changing its strategy, you can use Optimization test to determine average Stop Loss and Take Profit.

I think the mean reversal works in ranging markets, whereas a bottom band sell. or upper band buy can work well on their own in a trending market, but with limited consistency.

Simply add a supertrend filter and take signals only in the direction of the trend. The setting I use for supertrend is 14/5.0. I give enough room for the price to drop to the lower Bollinger band while still being in the macro trend.

Yes, but the RRR should be low as you ll have more false signals to deal with, but it's worth testing!

There is a problem here: you use the 1D timeframe and it will take us a decade to order a few positions. The daily timeframe has very little noise, if you move down to 15m you will immediately see the difference.

I have a different Bollinger band strategy. Which focus on trend continuation. When the price drops below or goes above 100Ema and touches Bollinger bands outside line, if touches the lower, then sell, if the upper - buy. RRR 1:1.5. Haven't got time to test it properly. But works great on 1H time frame and EUR/AUD pair. Could You test it, please?

@@mainaccount8181 The Stop Loss goes about 5-10 pips above/below the mid line of BB and based on the SL Take Profit is calculated with 1.5 RRR. But this has to be backtested much more, haven't got the time to do this, that is why I don't have strict rules. But of all my backtesting took place on Eur/Aud. Try it on 1 min tf with heikin ashi chart and take profit on middle line or lower/upper bands. Go in when heikin ashi bar color changes. Set stop loss above/below previous high/low. RR should be at least 1:1

Thank you for this! I had put the heikin ashi candles on the back burner. I don't use an EA, but looking at the heikin ashi candles, along with the regular candles, definitely helps to see what is going on in the chart (Nasdaq 100, Dow 30). Also use several EMA's, support/resistance. This is a nice conservative strategy to make some profits each day. 5 minute time frame.
