Just to clarify, my ‘89 C4 isn’t going anywhere. Also, the code causing the light is code 32 (EGR system error). I know it’s a best practice to always pull codes when a CEL comes on but I didn’t do that right away because the EGR switch/sensor was literally the only thing I touched before the light came on and I knew a code would only be general and ambiguous in nature and wouldn’t really tell me what the exact issue was. So, I usually do pull codes when a CEL pops up but didn’t this time because I felt very strongly that the circumstances were pointing to the switch/sensor. I also wanted to use the situation as an excuse to start replacing switches/sensors that I believe have been on the car since new 😬.

I changed the EGR Valve for a new one last night and had the negative battery cable disconnected the entire time it took me to change It. I also changed the spark plugs. My next guess is the O2 Sensors.

Last night I bought a 96 C4, 30k miles, really nice condition . It delivered with low fuel. I drove to the gas station to fill up, had no idea low was almost dry!! The Vette jerked and bogged, barely rolled into the gas station. I fill up, start her up, service engine light is on!!! F☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆K!! I drove it about 50 miles, the light went off, scared the crap outta me!!! I hope your situation is manageable!

When light comes on when it’s cold it’s the computer checking that egr temp switch to make sure it’s not shorted to ground. Which yours is! It only does this check when cold! The fact that you unscrewed it where it threads in threw it off of its location, if you were to back it off a couple turns the light will go out and stay out. Or just replace it. It’s got a bi metallic strip in it that expands when the exhaust gas flows at a certain temp through the egr pipe then grounds the switch to let the computer know the egr gases are in fact flowing. Do not get rid of that egr system your computer is tuned to it and it will mess shit up on ya! Anyways go with the ZR1 it’s a super classic and the first of its kind and becoming a huge collectible. Super nostalgia

Better to read the codes first before starting to replace parts. It’s easy to do with a paperclip or piece of wire. A code number doesn’t tell you which part is defective but it gets you in the right direction. Also, I would have used wire seperators instead of tie wraps. Tying the spark plug wires close together like that may or may not get you a misfire.
@ReynoldsRides3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I usually do pull codes first but, in this particular case, I felt like the circumstances were more telling than a code would have been. I pulled the code this morning and it is code 32 (EGR system error) which, to your point, doesn’t tell me much.
@bernarddesanglois86903 жыл бұрын
@@ReynoldsRides There are only 2 reasons for the ECM to set a code 32.... but the culprit is the same : the egr diagnostic switch. This switch is open (12volts) at start and idle. There's no EGR AT IDLE. When car is started and idling ECM checks if the switch is closed ( grounded) or open... if closed ECM throws code 32 : switch is stuck in closed position. Over certain conditions (cruising ) ECM will command the EGR vane to open in order to recycle the exhaust gaz to the intake via the the EGR pipe. The heat created inside that pipe will cause the switch to close (ground). Within 30 seconds the ECM will check if the diagnostic switch is grounded (read 0 volts) if not then ECM will set code 32. That switch is a basic copper blade which shape is changing according to the heat in the egr pipe. It can be adjusted by rotating the small threaded portion. Also... if the EGR solenoid is stuck open (EGR vane constantly open) then code 32 will appear when engine is at its operating temp.... hope it helps!!

Get rid of that EGR SENSOR.... and pipe.... there is a trick to foul the ECM when it commands the EGR valve to open thru the EGR Solenoid.... and later to check if the EGR switch is closed... if not.... SES Light turns on.

1. I would pick the ZR1 especially with it being in that sort of condition and year. 2. O2 sensor is much easier to do under the car. 3. idk if you have done a vid on pulling the codes but that would be good info especially since I have a check engine light that is always on no matter warm or cold, but the car doesn't seem to run worse than it did before the light magically started appearing.

You should just pull the code and find out what the car is trying to tell you. C5 Z06 all day every day and this is coming from a guy that has way too much $$$ into my own C4. The C5 Z06 is definitely the way to go. Easier to maintain yourself due to it being an LS6 and parts availability . Yes I understand it is a C5’s and they are very common, but the power and mods available for the Z06 won’t break the bank while keeping the fun factor. Plus the technology, better suspension components. The ZR1 is amazing all in its own right, however, it would require special parts and tools, plus the ZF6 transmission is not the best. Good luck to you!

And they only made approximately 5,000 C4 ZR1's. The C5 Z06's are far too common and will never get the acalades of the '90 ZR1. Even the C6 ZR1's aren't as special as this. GET THE ZR1
@snafu46963 жыл бұрын
1990 ZR1 is my favorite year because of it’s one year only body. It still had the sharp, angular nose and rub strips paired with the ZR1’s unique rear end. It also had a unique interior for the time as every Corvette before that had the interior your ‘89 does. That and the DOHC LT5 make it an easy choice. However, it’s overpriced imo. 1990 was the year they produced the most ZR1s and the most bright red ZR1s at that, so it’s not exactly ‘rare’. I’ve seen cars with 50-65k miles go for the teens depending on mileage and condition.

I disagree. That's an apples to oranges comparison. Terminator Cobras are extremely rare low production cars. We call those cars unicorns. On the other hand, C4 Corvettes are classic sports cars, plentiful, and fairly inexpensive to own and modify. That Cobra Terminator by comparison is a low production car and is virtually untouchable in terms of modifications to preserve its originality. The C4 is much more attractive. I love old Fords, I like that generation of Mustang. That being said, I consider the 99-03 Mustangs to be horribly unattractive and the 94 to 98 cars to be far better looking, esp the SVT Cobras.
