I am glad you ladies enjoyed this video. I know there were a LOT of references that are way before your time and that you would not get them, but everyone knew Don was just joking around and loved everyone. Back in the day, to be insulted by Don was an honor, no matter who you were or what race you were. That's why you see all the people being insulted laughing, because they laughed WITH Don because everyone understood how Don made fun of stereotypes.

Blessing your reactions are priceless! ❤ When I first saw Don Rickles I didn't like him I thought he was a racist, now I don't believe that instead his jokes are intentionally offensive and its really his act. Penn Jillette wrote a CNN article that he was the kindest man on earth, Wikipedia writes his best friend was Bob Newhart but he joked he never met him.

I was a teenager in the 1970’s/early 80’s. You have to understand; people (white or black) just didn’t get offended back then. We knew the difference between racial jokes and racist jokes. These are clearly racial. We all knew it was humor/satire. When Archie Buncker (white) made jokes about black people, we ALL laughed. When Fred Sanford and George Jefferson (black) made jokes about white people, we ALL laughed. Notice how everyone he made a joke about laughed. They didn’t get offended. They thought it was funny and understood it was a joke. We all got along way better than today too. This generation seeks out every opportunity to be offended and censor everything. I feel so, so sorry that you guys couldn’t experience a time like the 70’s/80’s. We enjoyed life, we enjoyed each other.

How true it was. And the people that were racist? There was no big thing about it. We just quietly iced them out to the point they left their homes and moved elsewhere. Or they kept their hate to themselves.

I enjoyed the late Mr. Rickles from the first time I saw him on television. I did meet him where I worked. (Long boring story.) He was truly a warm and delightful man. And, he, as famous as he is, from a distance of no more than three feet, called me a hockey puck. How many can say that? Then he looked at my face and the look on his face was "Come on, fellow; hit me with something good!" I was devastated at his death.

For anyone today who doesnt know about Don Rickles, it was all just an act - it was literally an honor to be insulted by Don and he was about the only one that could do it without making enemies because everyone then knew what a lovable guy he was in real life - he picked on everyone even his own people and it was all in good fun because in real life Don was the most generous kind hearted and lovable guy you'd ever meet. It was a different time then and people were able to laugh at themselves without getting all tight cheeked and self righteous, many comedians and celebrities counted Don as a brother and a friend as well as president Reagan who Don made fun of frequently. He gave to charities of all races as well as childrens hospitals etc etc.and we all loved him because when the moment came that Don was serious on a talk show he gave credit and love to so many he owed to over the years that helped him and you saw the other side of Don, he was a very different person than his act would have you believe. RIP DON RICKLES

After Sammy Davis Jr. got roasted, his words were "If they don't make fun of you, they don't give a damn about you." At 13:27, the man in the tan sports coat, that Don calls dumbell, is McLean Stevenson. He played LtCol. Henry Blake on the TV version of MASH.

In case you didn't realize- Phyllis Diller (with the wild white hair) was a stand-up comic and that was her look. The last one Eva (Eva Gabor) was in a 60s show called Green Acres- reverse plot line of the Beverly Hillbillies. She and her TV husband Eddie Albert were rich and moved to the country which is why Rickles said to her about living on a chicken house and crowing like a rooster.

Bob Newhart and Don Rickles actually were good friends. They would bring their wives on vacations together. The same with Frank Sinatra they would take their wives on vacations together. Don had many friends and he would make jokes of his friends. He loved people and his friends and fans loved him back. Don might of made jokes but it was only made in fun. Back when I was growing up the comedians would say the funniest things. We never got offended because we knew they were joking.

He was a political satirist. Racial and ethnic subjects weren’t discussed in public a decade before and were banned from television in anything but news content and would never have gotten past the censors prior to 1970. If you look at the dais in the clips from the Dean Martin Roasts in these clips you’ll see that he’s surrounded by his friends, many of whom participated in the March on Washington in 1963. He was using a comic technique known as crossing the line twice wherein a comedian says something ridiculous and follows the statement up with more ridiculous statements. That’s what made it funny. Some contemporary comedians who are trying to tackle these subjects have forgotten the concept and are running into controversy and criticism because without crossing the line at least a second time it’s not comedy, just editorial and the audience didn’t come to see anger. They came to see political satire.

It was the concept of racism in the old days and how it was framed, in which format. There were civil rights marches and riots over racism then that you still have, like BLM a few years ago. But when racism was framed back then in a comical way, like by comedians on tv shows, and people knew it was for laughs, then it was looked at in a totally different light. Or black, whichever.

don rickles' mantra - i'm not prejudiced. i insult everyone equally regardless of race, religion or nationality. people would actually attend rickles's stand-up shows hoping to be the target of one of his zingers. a few would even come prepared with their own funny quip in response. they'd find out the hard way - you can't upstage don rickles. he's what's known as an "insult comic." (watch triumph the insult comic dog as a comparison.) some of these comics could get really rough. but to the best of my knowledge rickles' never uttered a racial slur in his act. he would rely, not on slurs, but stereotypes for his humor.

Don Rickles was never mean-spirited in his insults, he was beloved by everyone, all races, that ever met him and watch him perform. The click bait question I think I’m offended Hahahahaha you can be offended all you want no one cares when it comes to Rickles he can say and do whatever he likes rickles was the master of insult comedy he did it in a way where You’d be laughing along with him He did it in a way where it was all in fun it was never Mean spirited or hateful it came from a place of Sarcasm and fun And people need to properly understand that that’s why they get offended because they don’t understand rickles they don’t understand What he’s like as a comedian when he said an insult to you He wasn’t serious matter of fact he loved people that’s why Johnny Carson gave him the name Mr Warmth because he was super friendly and kind to everyone he met but as soon as that spotlight went on him and he walked on that stage it was NO HOLDS BARRED anything goes That’s what Rickles was Back then no one got offended because everyone knew everything he said was purely and simply a joke and it was all sarcasm He had to have done something right If he Had a Career that lasted 57 years in the business and still the Top Headliner in Las Vegas Even Before His death in 2017 He was the #1 Headliner in Las Vegas if people got offended if people Didn’t like him They wouldn’t Have gone to see him If they didn’t Like him How come He Had Continuous Sell out Shows even in 2015 and 2016 So you can be offended all you like When it comes to rickles you either Accept it laugh along with him or DO NOT watch him no one begs you to watch him no one begs you to listen to any of his material That’s a choice you’ve made and therefore Insult comedy comes with watching Rickles Period.

I don't like his humor. I don't like most humor that involves trashing for just trashing's sake like 'roasts'. But that is just preference. I don't see a thing wrong with it, per se. I just don't find the humor to be that humorous. Roasts are not my cup of tea. --- But I have no issue with the content. Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx were amazing comedians. They roasted too, but it had more context than just roasting. My problem is when your just roasting folks and that in and of itself is the comedy. Hard to explain I guess. But I will say this. I prefer Don Rickles to the oh my he said something off color, lets ruin his life attitude of today's folks.
