Honestly it reminds me of a book called "Shattering Glass." Like Mike and John, Rob and the main pov character " Young" has a similar dynamic. Rob says jump, young goes " How High?". Their sexuality was irrelevant, their behavior was creepy manipulative and cartoonishly obvious to the point it would tip off anyone. weather or not they were gay did not matter, but reddit will always put identity politics in front of everything, especially people. Obviously not all of them but their are many people on reddit who would happily ruin some ones life for making an off color joke regardless of circumstances and they think its the hight of morality. At the point in the story where they were talking about homophobia, it was kind of the biggest red flag that was present. Otherwise it was a story about her boyfriend weirdly bringing up his friend at every opportunity, which obviously *became* the bigger issue later on, but at that point that could have been explained in a non-damning way. You have to bear in mind that those comments were made before the rest of the story happened.
