And then at home when we’re alone, we would listen to ‘Dear Mama’, holding back tears. That was Pac, emotional and passionate in every song. He brought me to rap, he made me love it. There are many great rappers, but he was the one, he is the goat.

This song isn’t literally about Pac. Pac had a gift of being able to tell your story better than you could. Pac didn’t have 2 brothers for example (twins)… Pac siblings Set and Mo ain’t dead. This song is about being black in America. A big issue we have is teenage pregnancy, immature people bringing new life into being and end up being horrible influences because they don’t have to capacity to be anything else. How we going have a strong black society and our mothers are mentally little girls? The woman teaches the nation first because of her role in child bearing… He could articulate the issue better than most so he was like a reporter to the world the atrocities going on in the ghetto. He’ll throw some personal flavor in there but a lot of these stories are allegories that have a message he wants you to grasp.

Speaking for myself I had become extremely estranged from my mother for reasons I won't share; but I was so detached from her at one time that I was over her. I was cold towards her to the point that I realized, had she died, at that time, I wouldn't have felt anything. I was powerfully devoid of anything positive towards her. Thank God that changed. What I learned to focus on was the life she endured. I learned of the many hardships she endured growing up. When she did die I was going through pictures of her as a little girl. There was this one. She was around 4 and so tiny and I thought about the abuse she suffered. She was just a little girl and something strange occured to me emotionally. I suddenly felt a profound desire that I wish could have been there to protect her. I was seeing my mother as a father sees his daughter and even now most times I think of her, tiny and vulnerable, and I just want to pick her up and hold her high to let her know she's valuable and safe.

I feel like a lot of Pac’s music, he’s really talking to himself. feel like he keeps reiterating that she’s a “little girl” to help himself understand his upbringing. grasping why she wasn’t able to be the parent may have needed her to be, more involved, more protecting, more stable, more nurturing. and being at the point he was at when he wrote the song, he realized that it wasn’t her fault. he realized that it wasn’t her simply choosing to not do those things, she just wasn’t able. he looked at himself and saw his ways, understanding firsthand the way an upbringing can effect you. he realized that her ways had the same conclusion as his; Her upbringing. and once he realized that, how could he continue to fault her? how could he not begin to see her glass half-full, and realize that, even broken, she still gave what she had left to raise him as best she could. which may have taken him from angry with and resentful toward her, to a more empathetic place, starting to see her as a hero for doing what she could even with all that stood in her way. she’s still a little girl because he’s still hurt. but he understands.

What makes 2pac such an inviting artist is something I see you struggling with; he was a master crafter of stories and lyrics. He may begin a song, especially in his Death Row phase, talking solely about his mother, but by the second or third verse he is intertwining other narratives from other stories he knows into his composition. More, he was a true representation of the young Black man at the time; no disrespect to B.I.G, but 2pac more exhibited the rage and confused politics and traumatized soul many black men carried within themselves then and till this very day. If you want to know his greatness, read through his book of poems "The Rose that Grew from Concrete" and listen to the entire album which was a collaborative effort by dozens of artists who at the turn of the century brought to life his poetic masterpieces.
