If you want a lot of weight in a small space, use TUNGSTEN. They make Tungsten fish weights, shot for reloading, etc. EDIT: Tungsten is roughly 2.5X denser (heavier) than steel. So replacing the same amount of steel with tungsten. the ball would've weighed about 26 lbs. :-)

Packy back in the 80`s here in St. Louis, Mo. The ABC had their HOF. On display they had a Home made bowling ball from the 1920`s that was used in Chicago that was chiseled out of a solid piece of granite. it weighed in at 38 lbs. with only a 2 hole grip . thumb and one finger.. Someone asked why any bowling alley owner would let someone use a ball like that? If you can bowl with a 38 lb ball using only your thumb and one finger... Who`s going to stop you.. Going back to the late '60's, an acquaintance loaded an AMF magic circle so it had one pound of top weight. Planning to turn adult shortly, he used it in his last city tournament at a center with overlane ball returns. Unfortunately, sometime after the tournament started, his ball did not make it up the ramp and started rolling back down with a very noticeable wobble. He was suspended from juniors and not allowed to join the ABC for another year. This was featured in the Suspension Report section of Bowling Magazine at the time.

I did something similar when I ran a pro shop in the early 90s. I drilled a big deep hole in two different balls. We loaded bb's and fishing weights in both. We gave them each a name - the "Catfish/R" (there was a Piranha/C and a Nitro/R out at the time, so we played on those names. Then, the other one actually rattled as I think I used part of a thumb slug to make a hollow chamber. That one was called the "Rhino Pro BB." We had fun with them for sure.

An interesting experiment would be to hollow out the center of a regulation ball (not sure how without cutting it in half), creating a slide area with a moving weight front/back, side/side to see if you could influence the ball to do exactly what you want. I imagine it going very well, or REALLY bad- no middle ground on this one. The idea is from looking at different cores from the factories, and different shapes of them. The weights could/should move too much or you create “wobble”, which you don’t want. But arranging it on a front load off the side of the two finger holes may induce the ball to spin better and curve harder. Anyway, random thought…
@hitdrumhard3 жыл бұрын
I have always wondered if getting a weight to transition from the outer edge to the middle, and making the ball RG number decrease by a crazy amount would create stupid amounts of hook.

Technically, not a bowling ball, but I remember back when I was a kid in the 60's they were demolishing an old bowling alley to put up a new one. So before demolishing it, one of the crew got an iron ball about the size of a bowling ball but about 40 or 50 pounds. They had to roll it granny-style down the lane but they were able to do so, and I think one or two strikes were made. There were no mechanical pinsetters and the ball was supposed to be returned on old-style ball return where the ball rode a rail on top of the land divider, but couldn't make it because it was so heavy. I was only 8 or 9 so I don't remember much but do remember the iron ball.
@pjzanotto74542 жыл бұрын
It’s interesting to think about what velocity your getting on the ball… Velocity = Mass x acceleration. At some point even if the ball is indeed heavier the speed (plus accuracy) you can no longer achieve would cancel out the effect of the heavier ball. At one point I see the speed is at 14.5 mph which is surely well below your average speed you go for. Not even to mention getting revs on the ball is harder to achieve.
@JoshCosta2 жыл бұрын
Velocity doesn’t matter, it’s hitting power. The pins weigh a certain amount and the ball deflects some amount. Higher the weight less deflection. I’d imagine though you’d get more solid 9 pins as a righty. Haven’t watched yet, but
