I Told Sunset About You is one of the best BL series to come out of Asia in 2020, and is an extraordinary cinematic achievement- thanks to Nadao’s high production standards. The script, direction, locations, acting and cinematography are at a whole new level of excellence. The music is soulful and evocative- Billkin and PP Krit - the main leads- have sung some of the songs (You Tube) - both are very talented actors and singers. Billkin’s “Unknown” ( it’s the last track on the OST) is an absolute winner and plays in a loop in your head.. The viewer feels like an omnipresent character in the daily lives of the characters because the locations - both indoors and out outdoors feel authentic. The colour scheme of the interiors and the colonial ambiance of Phuket’s Old Town adds a unique visual quality usually missing from BLs. The beauty of Thailand's beaches with the small but noticeable touches added by the art team, is excellently filmed. Though only 5 episodes, the series is filmed and edited brilliantly; and balances the love story of two boys against the underlying reality of the pressure to pass tough entrance exams. In most other BLs the academic setting is just for superficial convenience, where the role of family is just for tokenism. Various tropes and motifs like the hibiscus and the coconut, Oh-aew's preference for the color red , the sunset, running, flashcards, knee touching and traditional Thai food are beautifully woven into the narrative. The main actors Billkin and PP Krit, are friends in real life, and have strong chemistry, yet the sexual tension between their characters is deliberately kept ambiguous, in keeping with their tenuous and evolving relationship from friends to lovers.. There are many aspects of the series that are nicely balanced and consistent. This series deserves critical appreciation on many counts and should be on Netflix for the global viewing it deserves.

Great commentary by Axelle -- as she says, the show doesn't take sides -- it makes you love BOTH of the lead characters, even when they do bad things. But this means that when they both hurt, you hurt double. And thinking about why they had to hurt, the answer is Teh's fear of his own emotions.....he is afraid because his family, his society, his "destiny" have all made his deepest feelings.....wrong. It creates so much hurt -- as the series plays out, we see the hurt that Teh's fear and self-suppression do to almost everyone -- Oh, Bas, Tarn, his mother and of course Teh himself whose life is derailed and who is nearly broken by it -- all that pain, coming from his fear. Sad to say, I have been there and done that. To see it depicted with beauty and empathy on the screen is deeply, deeply moving -- and also deeply reaffirming, because somebody else knows what it is like.......

@AxelleLovesThailand3 жыл бұрын

I just had to pause at 5:28 because I was loosing focus on your explanations not because it's boring but the scene is taking me back to the time I watched the series and all the feels I had back then. This is one of my favorite scene if I have to choose one. It was the way it made me hurt for Aew and Teh as individuals. This was the scene where I hated Teh for being so goddamn coward and confused and hurting Aew. This was the scene where I hated Aew for pushing Teh and dragging Teh to the level of confidence that he (aew) have when Teh was just starting to find himself. I hated the writers and director for being so damn good at pulling all the heart strings because that scene was so true to life not only to those teenagers who are just starting to discover their identity but also for lovers who are at different stages of their lives and having difficulty keeping pace with the other. That's why they said being in a relationship is growing together. The moment one of you outgrows or fall behind the other, the boat starts rocking.

Hi, I just found out about your channel, so far I’m loving all the contents you put out, immediately subscribed 😊 . Very subjective and honest. I, myself also a long time viewer of BL shows, especially with Thai BL since the beginning of Love Sick til now. And prior to that was many LGBTQ movies and shows from both western and eastern cinema. It’s amazing how the BL community and Indus grown these past couple years. We have more contents to watch and discuss about. But like you said many of the works are more of quantity over quality scale. I really love how you I love your subjectively informative description of ITSAY in this vid. Would you consider doing a more in-depth analysis on ITSAY storyline, plots and characters.!? 🥺 By promoting and introducing viewers to support and recognize good high quality shows. Hopefully these changes will help shape better standards to the BL community and to inform production company to also upgrade their works as well. Cuz if we don’t start speaking for ourselves, our community and the LGBTQ community we are source from some of these producers, companies and actors could just use this community as easy cash grab. It’s so sad to see all that somehow be coming more obvious. Thank you for making this vid. 🙏 Also, Happy New Year. March 11, 2021 won’t be far. 😆

Hello there. Yes, this series made me bawl like a kid! It is in my mind, as I have read from other reviews, a masterpiece. Most, like myself, are awed by the art direction & the use of colours. However, I'm stuck on something I might have missed - did OH reject the "sacrifice" TEH made with the university entrance/confirmation? I played back repeatedly to examine the subtitled dialogue but could not find any direct reference to that. (Except that in one text messages on the group chat, OH wrote "No". It was an insult! Was that it?) Did something get lost in translation? Does anyone know? And also Axelle, you mentioned symbolism & references - were you referring to the hibiscus flower, back scratching and the ice desert? Lastly, I'm not sure how I will like part 2 as it will be set in Bkk & in universities again (yes, like most Thai BLs)!
@AxelleLovesThailand3 жыл бұрын
hi! yes oh-aew rejected teh's early admission as they both took the admission test alongside their friends in the last ep (when teh goes to cry in the bathroom before the exam.) also yes when I talked about references I was referring to those & many others haha! I totally get that feeling about part 2, for me I'm really gonna take both parts as two separate series so even if I end up liking part 2 less, it won't have any effect on my love for part 1 :)
@jerryhoh61663 жыл бұрын
@@AxelleLovesThailand Thanks for yr reply. Hmm.. In case i missed out, what other symbolisms are there? And why did TARN react so badly when TEH coloured the hibiscus drawing red? They usually are red (also as seen in the series: behind ears, etc). Btw, there are only 2 songs officially released from the series, right? (I count both Chinese & Thai versions of SKYLINE as one!)
@AxelleLovesThailand3 жыл бұрын
@@jerryhoh6166 I'm planning to make a full video on the symbolisms of this series once the second part comes out so yeah stay tuned for that :) red is oh-aew's color whereas tarn's color is purple, as the hibiscus on her bra were purple. on the opposite, oh-aew is always seen wearing red & pink colors (his jacket, the dessert his name comes from is pink, his phone case his red, his plushy that they now sell as merch outside of the show is red and pink, and most importantly as you pointed out, the hibiscus they found on the beach were red.) so when teh chose red to color the hibiscus, it symbolizes him choosing oh-aew over tarn which is why she freaked out. there are actually 3 songs with many versions of them as they were covered by both billking & pp and also had chinese versions. all of them are on nadao music's channel!
@jerryhoh61663 жыл бұрын
@@AxelleLovesThailand Awesome. I'm already thinking of 4 other "symbolisms & references" (not mentioned so far) as I write now. Btw I hadn't taken in that purple is TARN's colour (the flower designs are quite hidden on the bra under her blouse), although the hibiscus is purple on the painting she gives him (her last heart-breaking scene with TEH). Oh yes, the coconuts, and the red bra is a dead give-away. Thanks much for sharing. *In case I miss yr said video abt symbolism, kindly alert me here. Cheers

ITSAY really destroy me in and out TT I finished this series 1 month ago but I still can't move on .... I miss Oh-Aew and Teh . As a Chinese, I would say that the script was written so goooood , using chinese words to express the feelings of the character was so amazing and refreshing to see in a BL drama. A single chinese words really contain a lot of meaning in it. I'm so amaze with EP2 when Teh explain what's 伤心=sad to Oh-Aew on the boat and the acting was so awesome , still rmb Teh's eyes filled with tears. Knowing the language makes me feel more connected and it toucheddeep in my heart. Their acting is also very good , really having emotional engagement with this series .... T.T . Highly recommended !
