I took a BIG risk on this 30 year old Kawasaki KLR 250 PT.1

I take a risk buying this cheap Kawasaki KLR 250 Motorbike and after a 7 hour round trip to collect it, I try to fix all the issues with it so that I can get it started, such as cleaning the carburettor and checking to see if it has spark, but not everything goes to plan.

Carburetor icing is caused by the temperature drop in the carburetor, as an effect of fuel vaporization, and the temperature drop associated with the pressure drop in the venturi. If the temperature drops below freezing, water vapor will freeze onto the throttle valve, and other internal surfaces of the carburetor. Kawasaki developed a heating system to prevent it from happening using the cooling system.

Great video mate. The cap at 15:41 is to seal off the brass vacuum port, used for balancing or running vacuum operated petcocks or spark advances on bikes that have them, if not they just get capped to maintain vacuum

Cheers man, ahh fair enough could be that, I looked into that after making this video and found some things pointing towards it being something to do with a California emissions modification that some bikes had, but never found any solid answers but it’s remained capped and it runs sweet now so I’m not complaining

When an importer such as Kawasaki UK doesn’t sell a brand new bike, it’s perfectly legitimate to sell it years later as long as it’s never been used or registered. At that point of sale it is then registered as new, even though the actual bike was built years before. Simples 👍

IMO after working on older dirt bikes if they have a sub frame you’ll find they’re designed to be taken apart as one sub assembly like in the video you watched. It’s alot easier and less stress in the long run as there’s usually very little space between the airbox and inlet. The airbox rubber doesn’t age well and is prone to going hard and losing all flexibility which in turn can make it prone to cracking. If you look at modern enduro bikes and mx bikes anytime you watch people do carb work you’ll always see them remove the subframe to access it. It’s because it makes life easier

12:40 the choke on the 250 doesnt work by restricting the airflow, its got a mikuni register carburettor, so instead of affecting the airflow, it affects the fuel delivery by pushing a second jet into the airstream, therefore enriching the fuel air mixture.

With the registration, I have a KMX which has the same thing. What typically happens is a dealer will have them or keep themselves. Once someone wants one they will register it, mine was made in 1989 but it was registered in 1991 because it was on dealer plates until my dad bought it. Seems to be a pretty common thing with these bikes as you say, nothing to worry about. Does make it a pain to know what version of the bike it is as KLR and KMX look the same but don't share most parts, plus they vary over the years.
@HodgeAutomotive

Ahh that’s really good info to have mate, thank you, I was scratching my head over it for a while but it didn’t have anything dodgy on the HPI check and seemed and honest bike. All things considered a very clean looking bike. I cant help but think you were flooding it by opening the throttle as you were kicking, in any case you got there in the end! A very good find for £900 if you ask me...
@HodgeAutomotive
@HodgeAutomotive 21 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment mate, that makes sense but I think after starting it a few more times since then I've realised its actually the opposite maybe, and I don't think it was getting fuel to it and you can see in the video the kick before it starts I push down and hit a wall as suddenly the compression gets way more than it was as the fuel is in the cylinder, that's my guess as to why the compression felt like it went up anyway, either way im chuffed for £900 as you say!
@Bargos1968
@Bargos1968 20 күн бұрын
@@HodgeAutomotive Possibly but you were opening the throttle every time you kicked it over and it wouldn't really make that much of a difference to how the kickstarter felt under your foot. A sudden increase in compression sounds more like a stuck valve suddenly freeing up to me which wouldn't be a surprise given the state the fuel was in - you cant rule that out given that it was something that you hadn't checked.

It shouldn't be that hard to start. Check the timing or maybe valve clearance.

@@HodgeAutomotiveThese bikes are super sensitive to valve clearances. If the bike runs at all now, then itll fire on first kick every time with valves set correctly. That water line through the carb may be annoying but its actually gold. Look up "thermobob". Look at the hose routing very carefully, if you cooy it, you get a radiator bypass curcuit which makes yhe engine temps much more stable and the bike will run better and use less fuel.

Yes, heating the plug was a trick I read in the Used Bike Guide about 30 years ago from a guy in Bristol who would collect old bikes. He said anything within walking distance he'd go and make low offers on and do them up, heating the plug on old four strokes just before starting saved his leg and a pile of cash!

@HodgeAutomotive exactly because in the past everything was made of better material, now everything can be divided in half, people pay more for everything like before and get a worse product, the important thing is that it looks nice from new, look at old cars e.g. Mercedes, until now everything in the interior fits together nicely and the doors weighed like half of the current car 🤣

Ahh fair enough, it’s my first time working on an older enduro bike so didn’t know yet but you learn something new every day 👍🏻 thanks for the info
