Russia lost the Russo-Japanese war in 1905, and gave up many territories to Japan. But at the end of WW2, After Hiroshima bombing, and Before surrender of Japan, Stalin of USSR declared war on Japan & took the Kuril islands when Japan was busy dealing with the Americans. Smart move from Stalin btw. The only way Japan can get those islands, if further balkanization of Russia happens in future ( like what happened to USSR). But if that happens, it's Ch!na that will take advantage of it more than any Western allied countries like Japan
