Hi Matt responding to your request for comments my name is Steve used to live in Bexhill ,but spent a lot of time in the 60's and early 70's fishing in Hastings off the beach and the pier as a kid with my Dad usually after a couple of plates of whelks , not for me I might add ,in the old town . I now live in Spain and have rekindled my fishing in the Province of Alicante primarily at Santa Pola . Been following your channel for several years and enjoy the videos as you fish some of the places I used to go . Keep up the good work and your passion for the Bass. THANKS

Wonderful thanks for this. Hope I show show you a bit of nostalgia. I’ve actually fished in your part of Spain 16 years old in el portet I think it was called ? In a harbour and caught some weird fish I’d never heard off. Thanks for dropping by , yes the Bass passion continues next week. I love those old Hastings pier stories when there were plaice and tope!

Allways puzzles me that sea angler's rarely use a drop or landing net .I was on Swanage pier a week ago and a guy with a light outfit (lrf ?) Hooks a big bass on a size 8 hook with small squid strip .he didn't have a clue about how he was going to land it so the rest of the angler's gathered round and we ended up with his son? About 10 going down one of the metal ladders with a crab drop net and after a lot of faffing around somehow it was landed .he then didn't have a disgourger or forceps yet again we helped him that's why I know the hook size and bait (my forceps)after photos the fish appears to swim off .great to see prawns used on a fly rod looks like a good place to fish 🐟

I've had some great fun on the other side of the estuary. Go to the end of the breakwater on the opposite side on a falling tide, be careful very slippy. Cast upstream with a fast sinking line (flyrod) let it come down and swing it round the end of the breakwater, It's a holding spot for bass waiting for small baitfish being swept down.Same technique works well with small spinners and lures on a light rod too. When the tide drops further go onto the sand.

I’ve caught a good number of bass in the Thames and Crouch Estuaries, when the water is clear I have often seen fish following a hooked fish. The same thing is noticeable when fishing for trout in still waters. You would have assume that the fish following the frantically swimming hooked fish just want to join-in to what seems like a feeding frenzy. It does look a bit dicey fishing up there. Tight lines, as we used to say.
@SaltwaterAngler

Ohh we can still say tight lines! Yes your right in all you say here. Dicey Venue and I agree Nothing draws a crowd like a crowd following the hooked fish to see what all the fuss is about.

I use a fairly long bit of finer mono for my stop knot, long enough that the tag ends flow nicely through the rings. Also started using short bit of rubber tube either side of the float/beads as noticed the ends of the float can take a bashing and start to crack. Course, all of that is irrelevant when I get the depth wrong in the fast moving tides (Bristol Channel) and snag up....

Another great video, cheers. Looked like a fantastic day to be out fishing. I would be more inclined to use a small circle hook like a Mutsu light size 1/0, or even a size 1. It just allows the prawn to act more naturally, & helps with presentation in clear water. It’s amazing the size of fish you can haul in on a small hook.

I was going to make a similar observation. I use size 1 or 2 varivas chinu (gauge is thinner than 1/0) or 1/0 semi circles. Even with really big prawns. I don’t have problems with missing bites (except wrasse taking the head off) but always ensure the hook is razor sharp and there is plenty of gap from hooking the end of the prawns tail. I use a small hook to allow for more natural presentation and have found I get more big bass since scaling down. Thanks for the video as always!

Great vid, good variety of styles you shown us, also just what I needed about float fishing setup was thinking to give it a go on sea. I had similar experience with smaller Bass, been able to see them swiftly following the lure then change direction in the last split second, I actually thought they might've spotted me standing on the rocks. I prefer the active style of angling rather than sitting for hours on the beach, so these tips are useful for someone like me I think. Have you ever tried cooked frozen prawns from supermarkets? apparently works very well

Check the footage of the first Bass on the fly rod at 15:20 Matt, was that a much larger Bass right behind it? I know big Bass will try and bully a smaller fish into giving up their prize. Had it on a charter boat once, a guy hooked into what was obviously a dogfish and it was giving him strange pull downs every few seconds, it wasn't until the dogfish came almost to the back of the boat that we could see it was being harassed by a huge Bass, trying to force it to give up the whole squid bait.
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Thats interesting, Yes in the slow motion you can see maybe two fish. Possibly i caught one a bit later ? I didn't think of them bullying the others for the prize, Interesting I had always assumed they were just following to see what all the commotion is about ? Great in-site thanks

Are they excited by the hooked fish’s struggle maybe 🤷🏼‍♂️ or are they just sticking with it in a hunting pack, not realising it’s been hooked 🤷🏼‍♂️ Thanks for posting another great vid - we have been blessed with some calm scorchers this year eh !!! Hi Matt. Lovely video, the production seems to get better and better. I live and work locally, will almost certainly bump into you at some point I’m sure. I think I may have even made it into this video, albeit in the work truck on the other side of the river at 4:11. Do you mind if I ask what day this was filmed? A warning please for anyone who follows your lead and fishes down here. The tides go out a long way and come in incredibly fast. We’ve had several rescues where people have inadvertently ended up in the river and couldn’t get out. Also, on the East side of the river especially there is a very high chance of getting cut off by the flood tide due to a series of shallow sandbanks and deep channels that fill before the sandbanks cover over, so it’s essential people walk back towards the sand dunes as the tide comes in and pay attention to what is happening behind them as they face the sea. Deeper water, possibly too deep to stand in, may lay between them and the safety of the beach. Tight lines Matt.

@@KevCane8464 it’s interesting you mention the beach there. It’s a bit of a walk but I recon it’s worth a go from low tide up. Perhaps use a push bike and head right down on the western side. Will be giving this a go in autumn

I've observed them hunt in pairs before and of a similar size to what you caught. Possible brothers??

Yes Bass swim in year groups of similar sizes. Sadly that’s why people thing big fish are solitary . They are not they just have their year class plucked off by seals and trawlers

Have you read the GOV statutory guidance for next year ? From 1 February to 31 March each year, no more than two seabass may be retained per fisher per day. Have i read that correctly and where are these ICES areas it refers to. Do you know what area the SE ,is ie the Dover to Eastbourne area?
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Yes we still seem to be referring to the the original guidance. It takes a bit of a deep dive but the ICES areas are on another document. Will do a short video on this- excellent question. I never take bass under 45 and no more than 2 and only take fish in summer months any way on a personal choice.

Hi Matt, great video as usual very informative, could you use frozen prawns for bass fishing?👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Yes you can! The only thing is your not getting that clicking as an extra addition for the Bass. Ive noticed a significant difference when using shrimps that are basically dead they dont catch at all for me. Some good Prawn imitations are an option too to save you getting the bait. Trialled them in June and caught a 7lb fish.

Hi I've tried frozen prawns many times in the Thames estuary near me and never caught anything on them, I'll try and get some live ones next year! I think I watched a video of you trying to catch some near Herne Bay last year, I'll give it a go! Great video, I'll keep that venue in mind for next year!

Hi Matt, used frozen prawns on a charter boat a couple of weeks ago, first cast bang a 4lb bass it was a surprise and continued with them, a bit on and off I'm afraid as they were keen on squid also.👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣

That’s very interesting I was wondering if the bass might favour squid above all else this year due to their being 1000s of them 🦑🦑🦑

There is evidence that every sea fish would take a lure ! I’ve had flounder, mullet, black bream, garfish pollack coalfish , mackerel , scad, shad , rockling but plaice and triggerfish I believe would take one.

A nice day even though there weren't many fish caught, however you did manage to get one eater. Why don't you use a net to land your fish? Don't agree with you about the use of trebles they can do a lot of damage to the fish and they restrict the prawns movements, you can't guarantee that you'll only catch bass.
@SaltwaterAngler

Thanks for this comment. Yep i am always happy with one keeper. Have debated the use of trebbles on the Channel over the years. Appreciate your input here. The Drop net comes out once in a while.

@@SaltwaterAngler Thanks very much for replying. Regarding keeper bass, how opinions have changed. Back in the late ,1950s/early 60s when I did most of my fishing the perfect keeper was 30-35cm, pan sized. The bigger ones were always put back. There weren't size limits back then.
