I am almost 60 (and retired) but years ago I started tracking my clothing use. As a lover of lovely clothes (and shoes!) I needed to make sure I was actually wearing what I was purchasing. I made 20 wears my goal. In this way, I wasn’t just wearing the recent purchases. Once I hit that number, I was free to pack it up for the Sally Ann. I also limited the number of work outfits to about 25 for winter and around the same for summer. I have found my closet “turns over” every 3-4 years. It also forced me to look for innovative ways to wear items for which I had buyer’s remorse. Your spreadsheet is a much more polished version of my checklist!!

interesting: i never thought of turnover for clothes, but now i have a little peace about not having the items i used to love from years past.

I’ve been tracking on Indyx for 5 weeks and thoroughly enjoying it. I love seeing how often I’m tempted to repeat favourite items… it’s helped me be a lot more intentional about reaching for my lesser-worn items. I feel like a lot more creativity is flowing with outfit composition too!

There’s an energy to some clothes that you just can’t resist. It’s the energy that agrees with your energy. It’s weird, no matter how good it looks, we still gravitate to how it feels.

I use an app and it’s super helpful. So often people are like "I wore this a ton” and then when you have the data it’s actually been three times in two years. Whereas I love to ‘run up the numbers’ on my favourite pieces (30-50 wears and up is the ideal). It’s great to have a closet of mostly reliably great items versus options you don’t really use or need.

what app do you use?

yes this is amazing! it's wild how much I thought I wore certain items when really I wore them once or twice

I’d also love to know what app!

Stylebook. I haven’t found it invasive either. It just quietly works without any requests for upgrades or additional data. I guess it could sell on info about the brands you buy and money you spend, but you don’t have to enter that data if you don’t want to.

it's too much of a spreadsheet learning curve for me, after hours of research, so i decided that if i customized a template that i would use notion because it's easy to jump in without too much extra setup. right now, i'm using acloset and have my eye on whering as an alternative.

I enjoy seeing other people use spreadsheets to track their closet as well. I use a spreadsheet. I update number of wears for each clothing piece individually over the course of a month. I don’t track which pieces I wear together. I do keep a separate sheet for outfits, but I only add outfits to that sheet if I absolutely love the outfit. Keeping outfits separately let’s me track outfit ideas without needing to have worn the piece before, which is handy for new additions.

so smart to keep track of outfits you love wearing! love how you made this process work for you

@annw7843 I would love to do the same but I am confused how to build the spreadsheet. How do you bring the date of the wear to the piece. If I just add like a line per wear, I will never know if I already marked the specific wear. Can you explain how you do it?

I'd love to see a video on how to incorporate trends into your personal style. Or similarly how to thrift for your personal style. I find it so much easier to overconsume in the thrift store because I'm 'saving' items. Then I end up with things that don't quite fit what I wanted.

I've been using your spreadsheet for a bit and I really like it! I was wondering what you do when you remove an item from your closet (like sell or give away) -- do you delete the row in the spreadsheet? Or have some additional column to mark it as removed? Other?
@acTEEvism2 ай бұрын
I keep a separate sheet!! I copy the data over to a different sheet and add the date it was removed from my closet and then I delete that item from the audit section of my spreadsheet. I've heard some people have another column where they mark it as removed and add the date that way!
