I've skied this run many times at Steamboat. It is significantly steeper than it appears on the camera - a seasoned skier would have noticed how far the beginner slid after she fell (despite skiing at a very low speed). That said it is one of the few "groomed" black runs at this resort and requires the snow cat to be winched up the hill by thick cables in order to groom it. Most black runs in the US are not groomed and are either powder or bumps depending on time from the last snowfall. Double blacks in the US are usually not really runs at all but just sort of steep shoots and tree runs etc in the bowls of the resort - what is generally referred to as "off piste" in Europe.

As a ski instructor and filmmaker I can tell this is pretty common in snow sports, all the shots were hand held as you can see in 9:18 is just a regular dslr and the black diamond shot was taken with a phone, the pro skier shot both of this ones. At this slow speed it’s pretty easy to keep a hand held footage stable because you have no steps or violent movement with the legs that may end in a shaky video, remember you are sliding down, you are a giant dolly and you can absorb the vibration with your legs and hands, it’s easier if you use a heavier camera. The only skiing shot that wasn’t taken with a GoPro or by the pro skier was the one in the bunny slope, you can see the following camerawoman behind the beginner. You can always add slomo which give you smoother shots. Talking about stabilization you’ll definitely need it going at higher speeds, if you are using a dslr a simple handle c bar will do the work if you know what you are doing, a glide cam for better looking but requires more experience to use it and for the smoothest one a gimbal. If you are using a GoPro a karma grip will get the job done perfectly, a longer stick will help you. You can follow gimbalgod or Etienne Merel on Instagram to see what godlike cameramen footage looks like. I’ve seen videos of Etienne jumping with a full-size video camera with a huge lense over a something around 45 feet jump on skis like nothing

Skiing as an adult is tough man cause you have the fear whereas kids have no fear and are made of rubber. Takes guts when you're an adult and to fight you instincts to lean back when heading down steeper terrain; the key is always just take your time and don't push beyond your skill level. That being said.. if feel this video might be sending the wrong message that skiing blacks in three days is the way to go.. Skiing any run WELL is better than anything steep and putting yourself and potentially others at risk. I realise you had your instructor with you but it should be strongly highlighted never to ski / board or learn without an instructor. Too may people are 'too cool' or too proud for lessons these days and go straight for advanced runs like some kind of badge of honour. I was out with my team in France last year on an advanced run when an out on control skier crashed into the back of me breaking my leg, cartilage damage and rupturing my ACL ending my season and (at the time) potentially ending my skiing career. First things first, take care of everyone else's safety on the mountain! But again, well done. Hope you keep it up!

As a long time Ski Instructor of many decades, I would not recommend Skiers at this level attempt Skiing terrain that is far above their ability . . . I thought it helped me skiing shit that was harder when i first started cuz in all reality ur most likely not ganna die on a black diamond and so if you tomahawk down the mountain so be it ur jus ganna eventually learn how to stop. my freinds took me down a green run twice my first time ever skiing I still didn’t know how to stop and they took me up to a black diamond immediately after that and I bombed the hill trying to get down and tomahawked, almost broke my bindings and it hurt like a bitch but after that I fucking figured out how to stop and it helped me get better so quick instead of waiting a week to be able to ski black diamonds I could ski it pretty well within a day.

@@nathanpeters3401 Thats extremely dangerous to anyone around you. I have had to move out of the way numerous times for people (primarily children on their own) who try more than they are capable of and have absolutely no speed control or ski etiquette. You can get seriously injured in this sport, and it's the reason ski mountains have people sign waivers for it. I picked up skiing my first time really well, and by day 2 and 3 I felt confident going down greens and then steeper green hills and even the icey patches (bad conditions). You can learn really quickly without throwing yourself into the deep end straight off and putting yourself and others at risk. You need to learn how to stop before you leave the bunny hill. I had watched many videos in preperation for my first day, had taken a quick lesson, and eventually progressed from pizza to carving, and had good speed control/great form according to a very experienced skier friend who I had gone with. I haven't gotten hurt yet.

I've been skiing for 2.5 years now, taken about a dozen lessons as I have progressed in my time. It was impressive to see her do a black diamond run on day 3. Every ski instructor I've worked with says the same thing, because it's true. Take it slow, get back to your comfort zone of speed and control before you commit to the next turn, if you do, you'll be able to confidently turn and control yourself through the fall line, the line straight down the run, traversing across the run to your next turn. She was in wedge the whole time and had a pro skier there if something went wrong. The reality is, most of us don't have that, we have to stop ourselves. The hard part of steeper runs is that your uphill inside foot will be higher up with a bent knee due to the pitch of the run. You're relying on the downhill outside ski inside edge for biting into the snow/ice and providing the turning/traversing depending on the amount of ankle angulation you apply. It also looks like the DIN setting for the bindings on the ski's were set a little too high, her ski's didn't pop off when she fell. The way she fell was pretty much sit down the first time. The second time, she over rotated, sort of like a hockey stop, it looks like she caught the inside edge of the uphill ski on the snow, it tossed her downhill backwards because of her upper body orientation was lost when she was spun around. If you watch experienced skiers, their upper bodies are always pointing downhill, their legs are doing all the work. She would've had to rotate her upper body downhill, so that her left ski would've been able to get out from being underneath her and then bring her legs together and plant the uphill inside ski outside edge into the snow to stop. It's a very difficult thing to do on a steep run like this one, but doable. I am speaking from experience here, I lost my balance on some snow covered ice and my downhill outside ski inside edge didn't bite, I over rotated and went down on my back pretty hard. My ski's weren't under me, but they were uphill. I had to put my left hand down to get my upper body up enough to turn my hips downhill so that my legs would rotate from uphill behind me to downhill in front of me so I could plant my inside edges into the snow. I must've slid 50 feet while this was all happening. It was later at night, and no one else was on the run with me, but most people would've moved around me to avoid hitting me and/or me hitting them while out of control. In that situation, you've gotta take a minute, compose yourself and get back up. You're still on the run. I could've unclipped from my bindings and walked down, but wasn't going to let this hinder me, so I got back up and stood on my ski's for a couple minutes. Had to go visit the chiropractor after that lol.

Snowplowing down a black diamond takes way more balls than racers that use good technique need. Looks kind of dumb, but it's psychologically harder and it's physically harder to snowplow. What's cool about this video is she threw herself at something she didn't have the tools to do gracefully (parallel turns/hockey stops) and still owned it like a sloppy badass. I remember being young and snowplowing down a black diamond. It's hella scary, and it's hard on the thighs. This is a psychological victory at the very least. Great job, Michelle!

ok... I might not know a lot about skiing, however, when my dad took me a few weeks ago, there were things he said to me that helped me out a lot; He told me to lean down the slope, attack it. He told me no matter what speed I go if I know that going parallel (90 degrees) across the slope slows me down I can do anything. The first two days were hard and I wasn't enjoying it, but as soon as I got the hang of turning, I was having fun and blasting down reds. My goal for next year is to go down the blacks (European).

In Austria we start learning to ski at the age of about 3, so seeing adult people starting is very rare. I can imagine that this must be very hard, you did a great job!!! however that black diamond slope would be more of a medium difficulty in Austria 😄😂 I'd say the most challenging things here are 'off-road' tracks were you ski in knee-high snow around rocks and little trees 😄

Right? I am a ski beginner (in Austria. It happens. Well, actually came here to study, but still...) and this looked more like a red slope. In eight grade we went to Achenkirch for a week of skiing and by Thursday we were asked to go down a black one (there's like only a tiny bit of black slope and then it goes to a red one, so they thought it'd be managable). I remember it being much steeper then this. But I made it, had an accident half a day later (my teacher still tells everyone it was the most impressive one she's ever seen a student have), I came out ok, but wasn't up for skiing again afterwards so I waited 5 years until I was convinced to start it again. But I'll take it slow this time ^^ blue ones, I'm coming!

No, I'm studying in Kufstein, teeny tiny city on the border to Germany in Tyrol. They only have around 20 000 people and a University of applied sciences. But they attract people from all over Austria and Germany. We also have a few people from both Vienna and Graz ;) And you're right, I was totally fine after I fell but didn't want to push my luck... Hope you're also having a nice evening. 😊

In Colorado, a lot of the times if a slope is half moguls, then it will be classified as a blue/black instead of just a blue or even green. I promise the skiing here is WAY better than what was pictured in the video😂 most resorts have back country and bowls which are the ideal black or double black diamonds.

Its a great achievement getting to that point in three days, don't get me wrong, but that slope didn't look like a black run. I've been on slopes like that which were labelled blues - steep and icy (very hard blues though!). I guess it depends on how wide a range of difficulty the resorts have.

i agree, if im sitting on a BMX for the first time and a pro is training with me, then he might show me useful things, but i for sure did not train like a professional/ like him. i could never do his exercises or even understand the exact differences between his technique and others.

I'm about to ski again after a really bad last run a month ago. I FEEL THIS VIDEO. My dad got in a horrible ski accident that almost killed him 13 years ago and it was my first day back skiing. After a few bunnies, my sister and dad decided that we would go on a 3.5-mile ski and I literally had a panic attack in the middle of it. I thought I was going to have to get medical intervention, no joke, felt like a heart attack. This video was so motivating to watch before I go because I feel much less alone!

She didn't fall or even look like she was off balance even a little getting on or getting off the chairlift for the first time? Thinking this is staged. Plus she has the insight to look up hill immediately after her first turns? I'm pretty sure she's done this before, but you never know. She falls for the "first time" and she stands right back up? No, she has ABSOLUTELY skied before. No WAY is someone standing up from their first fall that easily.

That has nothing to do with training like a professional skier. She is dramatising and overemotional. She made a huge progress, but absolutely cannot call this professional skiing.

BloopyBlobBob I’m just telling, that calling it „training like a prpffesional skier” is a huge mistake or even a lie. This has nothing to do with training like a professional. I was training skiing profesionally for the past 10 years.

I loved this video so much! I'm going skiing in a couple weeks and I'm super nervous as although it's not my first time, my first time I did go I had an accident and it kind of knocked my confidence. It's frustrating being scared when your at the top but when you get to the bottom it feels like such an accomplishment! I really related to when you was talking about the mental side of skiing as I fing the steepness the worst part to overcome x but this video made me feel so much more confident that I can do it like you did X
