I Tried 3 Candle Kits - Soy & Beeswax - Worth the $$$ !?!? | Royalty Soaps

In this video I tested three different candle kits from Bramble Berry late at night after a lot of caffeine. There were two different types of soy and I tried my hand at beeswax candles for the first time! It was fun and we should do this again!

I love when you do candle vids. I used to sell them. I will say that on that box w the tins, wrapping in plastic was not so good, they could’ve used paper (recycled paper) but metal needs to be wrapped somehow. I once ordered a large number of 4 oz tins w lids and they were sent in one large plastic bag. Half were scratched!! So yes, they need to be protected. I don’t know why they have to be so expensive though. And having to hand cut a round label is so difficult.

I just went to bramble berry's website and priced the serenity kit out if you bought the items separately: 1. A four pack of th 13oz amber jars costs $16.99 2. Since they don't sell 1 pound bags of golden 464 wax you have to buy a 2 pound bag costing $9.99 3. The 2oz bottle of fragrance oil costs &6.69 4 Then you have to pay state taxes(for me it is $3.84) 5, Then you need to pay 9 dollars for ground shipping, $21.23 for 2 day shipping or, 27.77 for two day shipping. Katie forgot to mention that unless you're in the lower 48 states anyone living in state above them have to pay for shipping since i live in the NE states. 6. that leaves me with a grand total of $50.31 if i were to pay the 9 dollar ground shipping cost. If i choose te $21,23 3 day shipping i would pay in total $63.57, or $70,06$ if i paid the $27,77 for 2 day shipping.

FYI:If anyone has never worked with beeswax or any other hard to melt wax I use a mini crock pot set on low or even warm and had a continuous supply of wax on hand.

I use a little chocolate fondue melter that I found at a thrift store, it’s great because it’s like a small scale crockpot but the removable pot has a handle and easy pour spout.

Emily Cooper it depends on the scent you’re using, you should check with the manufacturer. But definitely wait until it’s off heat to add any form of fragrance. (I honestly prefer them without fragrance because I use beeswax that hasn’t been deodorized).

I made beeswax candles with my moms beeswax from her hives when I was four, and I wanted to do the dip ones that have to dry between every layer, and it took 2 weeks! It was CRAZY

As an experienced candle maker (or "chandler" as we were known in the old world), I can tell you that the beeswax is obviously going to be the most expensive. That being said, you can get it cheaper than what it costs in the kit. Overall, you can EASILY make much larger candles for much cheaper if you don't buy it in kit form (I make 8 ounce candles and sell them for the same price those 4 ounce candles run using soy wax). For a beginner, these kits would be great at teaching someone the basics of candle making.

When I was learning how to batik we used beeswax, but all of it was in these little slow cookers set on low so we didn't have to worry about reheating. Still had to work fast for making designs though!

Same ! We always knew it would be a batik week when you entered the room and were hit with the smell of the beeswax from all the burners. Waiting for the dye to dry between colours was hell though , we usually ended up only doing about 5 colours a week, which for more complicated designs for exams was tough. And you couldn't use a hot hairdryer becaue you'd melt the wax and it'd soak in where you didn't want it

I have lots of things to mention: 1) cute nails! 2) touch the bottle of FO to the spatula and let it pour down when you don't dump the whole bottle in. If you don't cut the wicks first, you can put them all over a hanger, metal bar, or similar and the wicks will stand straight in the middle while they set. P.S. As an ex-beekeeper who has made a lot of candles from it, I highly recommend making wax products in a warm environment without air conditioning on. I don't do it at all in winter if I can help it. It gives you more time for careful pouring, etc. and you can do top ups if necessary. Thanks for the demos!

I honestly only have worked ever with beeswax, and it was in little craft kits for lip products. I find for those adding a little coconut oil helps melt them in the microwave in short burst. Maybe the lavender oil would have helped melt it?

Katie has great, bubbly energy, I love it. More businesses need to wrap in recycled paper, or give you a wrapping option; single-use plastic is bad for the environment, but the biodegradable stuff tends to be a *huge*, dangerous allergen for a lot of folks, since so much of it is made with corn. A friend of mine routinely ends up hospitalized because it's in the top 10 allergens, and businesses are only required to label the top 8 as being involved in product making/packaging.

You can even use the heat gun on the bucket of melted beeswax to keep it hot enough between pours! I used to make beeswax candles at Beeswax Co. out in Dripping Springs TX (it was actually in Bee Caves when I was there) and to go home and take a hot shower meant reawakening that honey smell! It was amazing!

Kits are expensive. Buying the products individually, depends on your sources and how much you're buying. I get my bees wax straight from the bees.

I look forward to seeing your burn test. I've used the Emerald Agave kit and found that the whole tin of wax melted very quickly, like within 30min of lighting it. I've never burned a tinned candle so I wasn't sure if this is what's supposed to happen or if the wicks are too large for the kit.

Yeah that's too fast, and I did notice the wicks were thick. I have a collection of generic small candles (walmart type whatevers) I burn into the same candle holder until it fills too much with excess wax and has to be chipped out, then start the whole process again (probably could make candles out of the unmelted wax but I'm not that together). Those candles take much longer to fully burn through even when it's a new one in the just-cleaned candle holder, and the bulk of the candle is either equivalent or smaller to what's in the Emerald Agave kit, as I haven't seen the latter in person but can judge by watching the video.

Oh wow that's definitely fast! I've had the same tinned soy candle for months (not this brand, one from a local maker) and it's still half full. It's not much bigger than what the Emerald Agave one looks, and I burn it for about 15-30 mins each time.

I do really like the fact that the candle kits come in a container that doubles as a way to slowly cool the candle wax!
