Ai, and upscaling technology is at the point where it will advanced faster than sensor technology. Buy an original 5d or d700 and use upscaling for the 1 in 50 photos that warrant scaling the image. You’ll save money, storage costs on the 49 meh photos, and the final result will be as good as what a 50mp sensor will deliver.

Currently, I just don't feel mirrorless has the value in it for a portrait shooter on a budget. The used pro DSLRs feel great, they are a few hundred quid (as opposed to thousands) and they have beautiful optical viewfinders rather than tiny TV screens cluttered up with far too much information. It's a camera taking a portrait, not the latest 6th gen fighter jet!

Yeah for portrait photography I agree completely. Although just to point out you can change how much info is on the screen. The z8 even has no info mode then you can add in the most basic info or what you want. My choice for portrait is the canon 6d with their primes.

This is how I feel! I shoot a d3 main and whenever I’m working with the files I’m never really wanting. I have a d750 and even at twice the resolution I still chose the d3 for 90% of my work. If, and I really mean once the d3 goes poop, I’ll be looking for a d4s (maybe a d5 because the two of the same card slot). Mirrorless just doesn’t have it going on for me and it’s not helped by stupid rock bottom pricing on amazing cameras on the used.

My main camera is a 6DMKII of which I upgraded to from a 5D Classic. I purchased the Canon R, specifically for portraiture. The reason is that I can now rely on the camera eye focusing for me, also allowing it to be tripod mounted of which I can now direct the subject over the camera rather than hidden behind the lens. This puts the subject at ease and for me gives more natural feedback. Also great for self portraiture. Everyone to their own, but the Mirrorless R suits me down to the ground for my style of portraiture.

Sony has really upped their game in the past 5 years. I remember when they released the A7III what a revolutionary camera that was, but their lens lineup was lacking, and everyone bought an MC-11 adapter for the Canon lenses. Sony did not produce a decent 24-70mm f 2.8 for the longest time, which was crazy. Now Canon RF lenses are the worst lineup. Seems like the mirrorless camera offerings are maturing, but lenses still need to catch up. May make the most sense to buy the body you want now, adapt the DSLR lenses in the short term, instead of investing is a system that you may not want to stay with, and take a hit on selling it later.

I agree that the Canon R3 and R5 EVF’s are excellent and are clearer than the current Nikon models. However, the Z8 and Z9 have no shutter blackout in the high frames per second settings. I miss the ergonomics of the Canon 1DX Mark III. For my wildlife photography, Nikon currently offers the best combination of cameras and lenses at a better value for cost compared to the current offerings by Canon and Sony. The Sony G Master lenses, and the Canon RF lenses are optically excellent but extremely expensive. The Nikon S series lenses offer superb optical quality at a more affordable price. For me, the Canon R5 offers excellent image quality with high resolution, but the sensor is limited by rolling shutter, and by IBIS wobbling. Even when shooting on a tripod at high shutter speeds, consecutive frames show significant IBIS wobble. The Canon R3 is an excellent camera with fast, flexible, and accurate auto focus and has minimal IBIS wobble compared to the R5. The 24 megapixel resolution is fine for photographing large mammals, athletes, automobiles, aircraft, motorcycles, etc. However, for photographing birds, when significant cropping is often needed, the lower resolution sensor in the R3 does not offer enough feather detail compared to the R5, Nikon Z9, or Sony A1. I recently started shooting the Nikon Z9 and have had no problems with rolling shutter or IBIS wobble. The image quality and feather detail are equivalent to the Canon R5 and the dynamic range of the Z9 sensor is excellent. I do think that the auto focus in the Canon R5 and R3 three are still faster and bit more consistent than the Nikon Z9. I have large hands so the Z9 ergonomics are much closer to my favorite Canon 1 DX Mark III. I look forward to the Canon R1.

Great video again buddy. Blimey I was feeling your frustration by the end as well. I was lucky enough to have a go with the Z9 and R3 at London Camera Exchange in Derby near where I live, and I instantly took to the Z9. I'm lucky, because if it feels right in my hand, I'm sold. Probably why I still use the D810 and D4, as they feel just superb, plus the D4 with its illuminating buttons. I had a go with a Sony A7iii ages ago, but I just didn't like the feel, nor the menus, and never looked at another. I can see you with the Z9, really can. It would probably work better aswell, with you having a separate vlogging camera. Certainly food for thought pal. Good luck with your final deliberations. For stills, the Z9/Z8 is as phenomenal as you felt it was. You want an F1.4, Nikon gives you either F1.8 or F1.2, what are you gonna do? Pick one and go shooting! I'm bias, I've got the Z9 and all of the prime Z lenses, from 20 to 85mm, all Z, all F1.8 and I AM LOVING THEM ALL! Plus the 105 Macro F2.8 that is incredible. I LOVE picking my Z9 up. I've been using my Sony A9 for reportage work for over 4 years (around 675,000 shots), and recently with the new GM 35mm F1.4 and the new G 20-70mm F4. It's a fantastic set!

@@MartinCastein I understand and Nikon will never be a bad choice. The Z8 and Z9 are the most versatile FF cameras on the market, but also the heaviest and bulkiest. It is a philosophy that I abandoned more than 5 years ago. I am over 50 years old and the more time passes, the more I am looking for durable, light and quality FF photo-video equipment that also allows me to save a lot of time in post processing. The photo evolves very (too) quickly with the emergence of AI in particular. It is exciting and disturbing at the same time. In any investment decision, I now integrate this parameter with the impact of a significant reduction in my physical equipment costs.

Priority 1: Does it have the lenses I need. Priority 2: will I be happy using it or will I always be wishing it was something else. Priority 3: Cost Priority 4: Ergonomics Priority 5: Build Quality. Priority 6: Bells and whistles.

I would add one thing to this list as well, which could come under ergonomics kind of, but its the way that it works, like the logic of the camera. This for me is one of the big differences between the brands. For instance just basic things like switching modes and how easy that is. Like if i change from manual to aperture priotity for photo does that change then for video too or does it stay separate. That seems small but it runs throughout and entire brand on all settings. Its really relevant to mirrorless much more than dslrs and some systems are just more evolved such as sony for this.

All of the brands are geat...As you stated Nikon Z8 really hits a spot for me. It finally feels like a proper mirrorless camera from Nikon, just like the old DSLRs that Nikon was famous for. These days for me any camera is great, so I dont lead myself when choosing a camera by its specs, but rather the feeling in the hands and the looks, because I know that the feeling and the looks of the camera is what is going to be a key factor for picking it up and shooting, not the specs. Also the colours. Sony is great but the colours of Nikon straight from the camera, with only few tweaks is just amazing. Sony has weird blueish look to it that I dont like. That being sad, old DSLRs are also amazing. Mirrorless for me feel like a space ships, and we are still not aware how much photography gear has evolved. It is not a camera anymore but a portable computer 😅

@MartinCastein I understand, I'm not a Sony fan myself..it's probably the ergonomics Martin, Nikon has the best ergonomics for my hand anyway..The Sony menu system takes some getting used too as well...not for me...I will probably die shooting Nikon and it will probably be a DSLR...lol

Both the Nikon Z7 and Olympus E-M1ii/E-M1X feel like DSLRs to me in terms of grip, though I haven't been able to try the Z8 or Z9. Have you had the chance to check out the pro Olympus bodies yet? I prefer them over the Sony and Canon bodies, as well, and the Olympus bodies have really nice phase detect autofocus, even on the older models. and if you ever feel like walking and talking to the camera, you can use the IBIS on those bodies to good effect.

@@MartinCastein Well, doing things differently than before is very often a positive part of a development and evolution. Just doing things the way you did in the past is very often not necessarily a good thing. Just to give you one example: I remember when Porsche moved from air cooling their engines to water cooling, there were tons of people talking about Porsche loosing its way. Today nobody even remembers it, and Porsche produces better cars than ever. It’s called development……

Interesting talk, just reinforces my feeling I am not ready to change any of my gear at the moment. I don’t think it will ever happen but what I really want is a true system camera such as Nikon used to make, interchangeable viewfinders (mirrored and mirrorless electronic mechanical shutters etc etc). Unless sensors and lenses radically improve or my gear starts break down I’m sticking. Must admit it feels weird visiting a camera shop and not wanting any of the new stuff on display 😂

It really is subjective and camera tech as become so good it now becomes a game of splitting hairs. I went through a similar evaluation process 2 years ago but, back then, it was Sony A1 or Canon R5 for me. I went with the latter since (a) the R5 supports nearly all the video codecs as the alpha for half the price and (b) I just don't like the Sony form factor and menus (again, this was 2+ years ago). There were quite a few other nits. In the end, what you can't get out-of-camera can be made up for in post-processing software (DxO PL6, C1, LR and PS), especially with more recent AI advancements. Yeah, Canon lenses are pricier, but ditching my old Nikon primes significantly offset my new investment. I was a Nikon snob for 27 years, but after missing shots due to lower fps, waiting for Nikon to catch up on features years later and seeing Nikon lose market share over the past decade, I felt it was due for a change. I've haven't looked back.
@MartinCastein
@MartinCastein Жыл бұрын
That’s good and I think it’s important you got what’s right for you. I’m finding it very hard to choose. In the end it’s probably going to be the z8 for the reason that I just like how it feels and it does the video stuff I need completely. All of these cameras are excellent.

The reasoning behind not producing Nikon 1.4 lenses is that the 1.8 lenses on the mirrorless equal the DSLR 1.4 lenses in sharpness and quality. But they don't have the 1.4 depth of field. Nikon assumes photographers needing the bokeh will spring for the 1.2. I know Kon at Grey's of Westminster shares your frustration. He continues to adapt his F mount 1.4's.
@MartinCastein
@MartinCastein Жыл бұрын
I think that would be ok if the price difference wasn’t so extreme. I’m glad they put out a solid 1.8 range but I think they should have gone to the 1.4 lenses next and then a select few 1.2 lenses. I expect most people would prefer a smaller lighter and much cheaper 35 1.4 over a £3000 1.2 unless they can really keep the price down which I doubt.
